The SAT-3\/WASC submarine cable has more than doubled its capacity after the completion of its fourth upgrade, the controlling consortium announced on Monday, 1 September 2014.<\/p>\n
The SAT-3\/WASC cable system, operating at 40Gbps, has been upgraded from 420Gbps in the northern segments (north of Ghana) to 920Gbps, and from 340Gbps in the southern segments to 800Gbps.<\/p>\n
The 14,350km cable system was upgraded to meet growing demand for broadband services and connectivity.<\/p>\n
Overall, the upgrade enables a seven-fold increase in SAT-3\/WASC\u2019s original design capacity, the group said in a press statement.<\/p>\n
Telkom, one of the contributors to the cable upgrade, said the upgrade would allow the group to offer \u201cpremium solutions at reduced costs\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cTelkom\u2019s participation in this initiative further demonstrates commitment to remain customer-centric and cost-effective,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n
Telkom has direct ownership and investment in the EASSy, WACS, EIG, S3WS, SMW3, and Columbus-3 cable systems, giving it formidable gateway redundancy in South Africa.<\/p>\n
