Those who are optimistic seek potential through action, he said.

Reality

Despite taking a more optimistic approach, this cannot be removed from reality.

In reality, although South Africa has constructive policies, the state is moving too slowly to achieve any of its objectives, while the public sector is breaking down, leading to corruption and incompetence, Gore said.

The Discovery CEO said that the businesses have proposed three ways to help realise the country’s potential:

Creating a stable energy supply which will support the Energy Action Plan by improving the performance of power stations, enhancing grid infrastructure and unleashing municipal wheeling and trading of electricity.

Fast-tracking the private sector participation framework to improve the operation of the nation’s logistics infrastructure.

Helping law enforcement agencies from a distance by delivering resources and expertise to enhance investigations and prosecutions.

He added that individual citizens could also help by taking a stand against corruption and decline by keeping public spaces well-maintained and opposing bribes and kickbacks.

Watch: Adrian Gore discusses Discovery’s incredible growth and success

Other outlooks

Gore’s optimism counters the general negativity surrounding the country.

The International Monetary Fund recently said that South Africans’ economy is expected to only grow by 0.1% in 2023, revising its January estimate of 1.2%.

National Treasury’s projection is also dire, standing at 0.9% for the year.

The energy crisis is mainly responsible for the negative economic outlooks for the year, with Eskom implementing daily load shedding for all but one day in 2023.

South Africans have also had to deal with high inflation, with CPI data from StatsSA showing that inflation grew in February to 7.0% from 6.9% in January.

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB’s) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to hike interest rates by 50 basis points to try to bring prices under control.

Many economists expected the SARB to only raise interest rates by 25 basis points and for the bank to signal that the hiking cycle was ending.

However, the SARB said that it cannot predict when it will stop hiking interest rates.

“Economic and financial conditions are expected to remain more volatile for the foreseeable future. In this uncertain environment, monetary policy decisions will continue to be data-dependent and sensitive to the balance of risks to the outlook,” Reserve Bank governor Lesetja Kganyago said.

Carmen Nel, Economist and Macro Strategist, Matrix Fund Managers, said that the SARB is likely to remain risk averse and will not cut interest rates during the year.

“As such, we think the MPC will be reluctant to cut rates early or aggressively in the absence of a major growth destructive non-inflationary crisis. In the pre-Covid interest rate cycle, the SARB lagged the rate cuts that came through from other emerging market central banks, despite weak growth and falling inflation.

“We think the more challenging global funding backdrop combined with SA’s current account deficit and less positive fiscal outlook could again lead to a reluctant and delayed easing cycle this time round,” Nel said.

Cash-strapped South Africans will thus have to deal with interest rate hikes, electricity price hikes and medical aid hikes from April.

Read: Triple blow for South Africans next month

Discovery Group CEO Adrian Gore says South Africans must be optimistic to unlock the nation’s potential.

[4
4883,26
post-676893","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business-opinion","tag-discovery","tag-headline
["GET
