{"id":687587,"date":"2023-05-12T12:34:34","date_gmt":"2023-05-12T10:34:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=687587"},"modified":"2023-05-12T12:34:34","modified_gmt":"2023-05-12T10:34:34","slug":"government-scrambles-to-end-investment-strike-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/687587\/government-scrambles-to-end-investment-strike-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Government scrambles to end investment strike in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s Deputy President Paul Mashatile is set to meet captains of industry amid an energy crisis that\u2019s stifling economic growth and souring investor sentiment.<\/p>\n<p>Mashatile will meet with the country\u2019s top CEOs in a closed dinner hosted by the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on May 19, according to an invitation seen by Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees will have an opportunity to put questions to Mashatile regarding the state of South Africa\u2019s economy and \u201cthe key deliverables of his portfolio, policy reforms and actions to build investor confidence,\u201d the invite read.<\/p>\n<p>Mashatile, 61, took over as deputy president in March after being elected in the same position at the ruling African National Congress\u2019 elective conference in December.<\/p>\n<p>Investor confidence has waned as state-owned Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. rations electricity for as long as 12 hours a day to prevent the grid from total collapse while it works to maintain an aging fleet of coal-fired plants prone to breakdowns.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-687593\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/foreign-investment.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"814\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/foreign-investment.jpg 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/foreign-investment-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/foreign-investment-768x540.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Africa\u2019s most developed economy has been battling to keep up with its emerging market peers as it struggles to resolve worsening power cuts, high unemployment and widespread corruption.<\/p>\n<p>The rand weakened by a record, falling as low as 19.5148 to the dollar on Friday, undermined by domestic challenges and reports that the US ambassador to South Africa accused the country of supplying arms to Russia. An index of South African banking stocks tumbled to the lowest since October 2022 as the local currency extended losses.<\/p>\n<p>The rand breached its all-time low of 19.3508 to the dollar, which was set during the Covid-19 lockdown in April 2020, and was trading at 19.3641 to the dollar at 10:32 a.m. in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n<p>South African companies are spending billions of rands to keep businesses running as the power crisis deepens and impacts earnings.<\/p>\n<p>Mashatile will seek to restore business and investor confidence at the meeting, as the country prepares for general elections next year.<\/p>\n<p>An increasing number of executives including Daniel Mminele, chairman-designate of Nedbank Group Ltd. and MTN Group Ltd.\u2019s Chief Executive Officer Ralph Mupita have called for urgency in resolving domestic hindrances to economic growth and warned the country is at risk of becoming a so-called failed state.<\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s inability to resolve pressing domestic challenges has reduced the popularity of the ANC and President Cyril Ramaphosa, who last month pledged to attract R2 trillion ($103 billion) of investment by 2028.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/687529\/perfect-storm-hits-south-africa-tanking-the-rand-to-its-worst-levels-ever\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">Perfect storm hits South Africa \u2013 tanking the rand to its worst levels ever<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s Deputy President Paul Mashatile is set to meet captains of industry amid an energy crisis that\u2019s stifling economic growth and souring investor sentiment.
