{"id":689577,"date":"2023-05-21T11:00:37","date_gmt":"2023-05-21T09:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=689577"},"modified":"2023-05-19T17:25:00","modified_gmt":"2023-05-19T15:25:00","slug":"cars-that-cost-the-same-as-the-average-monthly-take-home-pay-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/689577\/cars-that-cost-the-same-as-the-average-monthly-take-home-pay-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Cars that cost the same as the average monthly take-home pay in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The average take-home pay in South Africa is just over R15,000 per month, and there are 15 cars that cost around the same to finance.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/683297\/this-is-the-average-take-home-pay-in-south-africa-right-now-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest<\/a> BankservAfrica Take-home Pay Index (BPTI), <strong>the average monthly take-home pay is <\/strong><strong>R15,321.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the report, the unexpected headline inflation increase in March, among other factors, led to take-home pay slipping marginally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith inflation remaining elevated for longer than hoped for and little indication of a notably different economic environment in 2023, salary adjustments and the job market will likely remain lacklustre this year,\u201d said independent economist Elize Kruger.<\/p>\n<p>Considering the current figure, BusinessTech looked at all the new cars on the market that cost around the same to finance, and 15 vehicles require a monthly instalment close to the average take-home pay.<\/p>\n<p>These cars include several bakkies listed on Naamsa\u2019s best-selling cars list and as well as GWM\u2019s limited edition P Series LTD 4&#215;4.<\/p>\n<p>The new P Series <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/689111\/new-limited-edition-bakkie-launched-in-south-africa-with-pricing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched<\/a> in South Africa on Thursday (18 May) and offers exclusive features and GWM\u2019s newly developed four-wheel drive system.<\/p>\n<p>The list below also includes the most powerful Honda Civic &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/683151\/all-new-honda-civic-type-r-launching-in-south-africa-pricing-and-features\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Civic Type R<\/a> &#8211; which comes with 7kW and 20Nm more than the outgoing model.<\/p>\n<p>While the take-home pay is R15,321, to accommodate this list, we broadened the monthly instalment criteria to between R15,000 to R15,400 \u2013 as there are no cars that cost the exact take-home pay amount.<\/p>\n<p>To calculate the monthly instalments of the vehicles on this list, we used WesBank\u2019s\u00a0repayments calculator with the following parameters:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Payment term \u2013\u00a0<strong>60 terms (5 years)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Interest \u2013\u00a0<strong>11.25%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Deposit \u2013\u00a0<strong>0%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Balloon \u2013\u00a0<strong>No balloon payment<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Extras \u2013\u00a0<strong>No optional extras<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Following these criteria, and the instalment bracket, the cars that will cost you as much as the average take-home pay range between R683,000 and R700,000.<\/p>\n<p>Experts still recommend that prospective car owners spend no more than 25% of their monthly income on vehicle finance. Therefore, people who can afford the cars on this list should earn around R61,500 per month.<\/p>\n<p>The 15 cars will cost you as much as the average take-home pay in South Africa are listed
