{"id":692791,"date":"2023-05-31T10:42:59","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T08:42:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=692791"},"modified":"2023-05-31T10:42:59","modified_gmt":"2023-05-31T08:42:59","slug":"salaries-in-south-africa-take-a-dive-this-is-the-average-take-home-pay-right-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/692791\/salaries-in-south-africa-take-a-dive-this-is-the-average-take-home-pay-right-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Salaries in South Africa take a dive &#8211; this is the average take-home pay right now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The overall dismal economic environment has contributed to the average nominal take-home pay slipping further in April 2023, according to the monthly BankservAfrica Take-home Pay Index (BTPI).<\/p>\n<p>The number of salary payments has also fallen, signalling a troubled job market.<\/p>\n<p>The average nominal take-home pay was R14,534, showing a sizeable decline on the R15,170 recorded a year ago, said Shergeran Naidoo, BankservAfrica\u2019s Head of Stakeholder Engagements.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As companies come under strain from the harsh load shedding, high production costs, rising interest rates and moderating demand, the environment remains unfavourable for comfortable wage increases or job creation,&#8221; the group said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Organisations will likely remain in \u2018survival model\u2019 for an extended period of time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to independent economist, Elize Kruger, the BTPI has also declined in real times as inflation remains at elevated levels, further eroding the purchasing power of average salaries.<\/p>\n<p>In real terms, the average salary was R13,524, <strong>declining by a notable 10.4% from a year earlier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite April\u2019s headline inflation lowering to 6.8% year-on-year and forecasts suggesting prices could moderate at a faster pace in the coming months, the recent depreciation of the rand exchange could throw a spanner in the works if the rand remains at current weaker levels for a prolonged period, BankservAfrica said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-692793\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Take-home-pay-index-May-2023.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1171\" height=\"772\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Take-home-pay-index-May-2023.png 1171w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Take-home-pay-index-May-2023-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Take-home-pay-index-May-2023-1024x675.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Take-home-pay-index-May-2023-768x506.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1171px) 100vw, 1171px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After two consecutive months of moderate increases in the number of salaries paid into South Africans\u2019 bank accounts, BankservAfrica\u2019s data \u2013 adjusted for weekly payments \u2013 suggests that more than half of these gains were reversed in April, with <strong>123,000 fewer salaries paid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe South African job market is still recovering from heavy job losses incurred from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, a challenge amid the low growth reality in South Africa,\u201d Kruger said, adding that not only is the country in catch-up mode, it must also accommodate the constant growth in the working age population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith little indication of a different economic environment in 2023 and an even lower economic growth forecast for 2023 compared to 2022, the job market \u2013 and salary adjustments &#8211; are likely to remain lacklustre for the remainder of the year.
