{"id":694837,"date":"2023-06-08T17:07:14","date_gmt":"2023-06-08T15:07:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=694837"},"modified":"2023-06-08T17:07:14","modified_gmt":"2023-06-08T15:07:14","slug":"south-africa-risks-10-of-gdp-for-the-love-of-russia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business-opinion\/694837\/south-africa-risks-10-of-gdp-for-the-love-of-russia\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa risks 10% of GDP for the love of Russia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa stands to lose as much as R612.7 billion in export revenue, almost a 10th of its gross domestic product (GDP), should some of its main trading partners retaliate against its unwillingness to take a stance against Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether, the EU and the US account for 30.4% of total exports by South Africa,\u201d compared with Russia\u2019s 0.23%, or 0.07% of GDP, said Ndivhuho Netshitenzhe, an economist at Stanlib Asset Management.<\/p>\n<p>Stanlib has more than R650 billion ($34.4 billion) in assets under management.<\/p>\n<p>This means, she said in a note, should geopolitical tensions escalate and the West acts against South Africa, it could lose over R612.7 billion in export revenue.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa says it has adopted a non-aligned stance toward the war in Ukraine and has abstained from several United Nations votes condemning Russia\u2019s invasion.<\/p>\n<p>This neutrality has become \u201cseemingly compromised\u201d as the nation consistently interacts with Russia through diplomatic and military channels, Netshitenzhe said.<\/p>\n<p>In February, South Africa held naval exercises with China and Russia.
