{"id":694871,"date":"2023-06-09T17:00:51","date_gmt":"2023-06-09T15:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=694871"},"modified":"2023-06-12T13:21:58","modified_gmt":"2023-06-12T11:21:58","slug":"the-cheapest-retailer-for-groceries-in-south-africa-right-now-woolies-vs-checkers-vs-pick-n-pay-and-more-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/694871\/the-cheapest-retailer-for-groceries-in-south-africa-right-now-woolies-vs-checkers-vs-pick-n-pay-and-more-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The cheapest retailer for groceries in South Africa right now \u2013 Woolies vs Checkers vs Pick n Pay and more"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Of the eight most popular grocery retailers in South Africa, Makro offers the cheapest basket of essential items for the second consecutive month as of May 2023.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to The Outlier\u2019s monthly grocery basket comparison, which collects the prices of nine staple foods and products near the end of each month from eight major retailers \u2013 Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Spar, Makro, Boxer, Food Lover\u2019s Market and Woolworths.<\/p>\n<p>The basket of foods and products is described as made up of essential goods most people are likely to have in their homes and use daily.<\/p>\n<p>The grocery basket comparison includes nine necessities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>700g loaf of Albany Superior sliced white bread or store brand;<\/li>\n<li>2-litre sunflower oil (cheapest option);<\/li>\n<li>2.5kg Iwisa maize meal;<\/li>\n<li>2.5kg Selati white sugar;<\/li>\n<li>2-litre milk (cheapest option);<\/li>\n<li>2kg Tastic rice;<\/li>\n<li>2.5kg Snowflake cake flour;<\/li>\n<li>175g bar of Dettol herbal soap; and<\/li>\n<li>9-pack of two-ply toilet paper (cheapest option);<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Outlier&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theoutlier.co.za\/outlier-grocery-basket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a> that for May 2023, it switched to the cheapest sunflower oil, milk and toilet paper brands. \u201cWe did this because it was becoming increasingly difficult to compare the same brands from store to store,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>The brands of the other six items \u2013 bread, maize meal, white sugar, rice, cake flour and soap \u2013 stay the same. The comparison covers the various retailers in several areas within Gauteng.<\/p>\n<p>According to the data, Makro offered the cheapest basket in May 2023, totalling R382.55. This is R11 cheaper than its basket offering in April, which helped it remain the cheapest retailer for a second consecutive month.<\/p>\n<p>Spar has the most expensive basket at R419.91, which is R37.36 more than Makro. It must be noted that Spar is franchised, meaning prices and items can vary from store to store.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the price of Spar\u2019s basket dropped more than at Marko month-on-month, with Spar\u2019s basket price falling by R13.50 compared to April.<\/p>\n<p>Woolworths came in as the second most expensive \u2013 sitting just R1 below Spar at R418.91 \u2013 whiles Shoperite is the second cheapest in May with a basket price of R385.91.<\/p>\n<p>The table below and the infographic give the price breakdown for each item from the eight grocery retailers and who comes out as the high in South Africa due to relentless load shedding and a weaker rand.<\/p>\n<p>In May, the <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/692901\/its-a-good-time-to-braai-in-south-africa-but-keep-the-guest-list-small-for-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest<\/a> Household Affordability Index by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice &amp; Dignity Group (PMBEJD) showed the average cost of the Household Food Basket remained over R5,000 for the second time in history, at R5,071.59.<\/p>\n<p>Year-on-year (YoY), the average cost of the basket increased by R461.70 (10.0%).
