The central bank estimates that the outages will shave two percentage points off the nation’s growth rate this year.

“The amelioration has not been a fluke,” Makwana said. He attributed part of the gains to the company’s decisions to scrap the post of chief operating officer – giving individual plant managers more direct access to senior executives – changes he said had improved morale.

On Friday, Eskom Generation Executive Eric Shunmagum told reporters that a series of winter storms over the past week had helped offshore wind plants boost their output, reducing outages.

The improved availability of electricity has also been driven by higher tariffs that have cut demand, improved maintenance at power plants, and increased diesel supply at the open gas cycle turbines used for emergency supply during periods of high demand, he said.

The rand has gained 4.3% against the dollar over the last five days, the third-best performance globally, data compiled by Bloomberg show, partly due to the easing of the power crisis.

However, Eskom’s so-called energy availability factor level remains below the 64% its board had targeted by this juncture and needs to be more sustained.

“We are making headway,” Makwana said. “It’s still early days to have song and dance, but we’ve seen this consistent performance for a full month now.”

The chairman expects Eskom to turn a corner by 2025 and that the energy availability factor could potentially rise to 70% by then.

The board is also working on a longer-term strategy for the company, dubbed the Eskom 2035 benchmark process.

Eskom risks losing some of its revenue as many of its larger customers build their own plants and wealthier citizens install solar panels to shield themselves against power cuts.

A plan to establish the utility’s transmission business as a separate unit should ease access to the grid and could also impact its revenue.

But even if Eskom sees a slightly subdued demand for electricity due to an increase in private generation, Makwana doesn’t envision the utility’s long-term viability as being threatened if it is efficiently run.

“We are at the early germination of seedlings of hope,” he said.

Read: Load shedding to be suspended again this week – here’s the planned schedule

Eskom Chairman says the better performance of Eskom isn’t a fluke but rather attributed to a change in its management structure.

[9874
1850,1164
post-695365","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-energy","tag-bloomberg","tag-eskom
["GET
