{"id":69655,"date":"2014-09-29T12:57:41","date_gmt":"2014-09-29T10:57:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=69655"},"modified":"2014-09-29T12:57:41","modified_gmt":"2014-09-29T10:57:41","slug":"new-banking-scam-warning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/69655\/new-banking-scam-warning\/","title":{"rendered":"New banking scam warning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) has issued a notice warning banking customers of a new scam.<\/p>\n<p>The scam revolves around a change in banking details, where recipients receive an email\/letter informing them that their particular supplier has changed their bank account details.<\/p>\n<p>The scammers will include details of the new account and the recipient will then be asked to make future payments into the new account.<\/p>\n<p>Sabric issued the following guidelines to avoid falling victim to such scams:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Question<\/strong> whether well-known companies would change their banking details without notifying people through more formal channels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure that you <strong>confirm<\/strong> any change of banking details with someone you usually deal with at the organisation before making any changes to beneficiary accounts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>When <strong>calling<\/strong> the organisation to confirm the changes to banking details, use a number from the telephone directory and not the number on the letterhead or fax, as you will, in all likelihood, be calling the fraudster.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Beware<\/strong> of supposedly confirmatory emails from almost identical email addresses, such as .com instead of .co.za, or an address that differs from the genuine one by perhaps 1 letter that can be easily missed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Instruct staff<\/strong> with the responsibility of paying invoices to scrutinize invoices for irregularities and escalate your suspicions to a known contact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure that your company\u2019s <strong>private information<\/strong> is not disclosed to third parties who are not entitled to receive it, or third parties whose identities cannot be rightfully verified.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shred<\/strong> your business and suppliers&#8217; invoices or any communication material that may contain letterheads, as opposed to just discarding it in rubbish bins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Bank customers must be wary when being told that a certain supplier has changed their banking details and must thoroughly verify if the details have indeed changed,&#8221;
