{"id":697697,"date":"2023-06-21T10:46:05","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T08:46:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=697697"},"modified":"2023-06-21T10:46:48","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T08:46:48","slug":"equipping-young-south-africans-for-the-workplace-ctu-training-solutions-online-panel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/industry-news\/697697\/equipping-young-south-africans-for-the-workplace-ctu-training-solutions-online-panel\/","title":{"rendered":"Equipping young South Africans for the workplace \u2013 CTU Training Solutions online panel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Award-winning private tertiary education provider CTU Training Solutions recently held an online panel discussion titled \u201cYoung South Africa Leading the Future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The panel was hosted by voice artist, actor, MC, and content creator Themba Robin, and featured prominent young business leaders, entrepreneurs, and economists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ctutraining.ac.za\/?utm_source=MyBroadband&amp;utm_medium=Article&amp;utm_campaign=June+2023\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Learn more about CTU Training Solutions.<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>CTU Training Solutions is passionate about upskilling and equipping South African youth to build a sustainable future, and held this online event to provide a platform for experts to tackle the challenges young South Africans face.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Image-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Image-1-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-697703\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Image-1-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Image-1-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Image-1-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Image-1.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Youth unemployment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The panellists agreed that unemployment is a huge issue in South Africa, and a significant contributor to this is the large skills gap in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To close the gap, young South Africans must take whatever opportunities they can to develop different skills and monetise them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The panel identified opportunities in fields like social media, digital technologies, the crypto industry, and even filling in potholes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we look at something like potholes, there are huge opportunities to create jobs while plugging the holes in our country,\u201d said Cadena Growth Partners analyst Abdul Soondka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Itumeleng Mokoena, an economist at Trade and Industrial Policy Strategies, suggested that the best way to solve these challenges is \u201cjust to start\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young South Africans must take the opportunities in front of them to get to where they want to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The panellists then acknowledged that while taking initiative is critical, young South Africans also need mentors to navigate the working world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe must adopt young people in a mentorship capacity to equip them will the skills needed to find a job in today\u2019s economy,\u201d said Mokoena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the responsibility of more experienced members of the workforce, the panellists said, before encouraging these workers to embrace their younger colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mental health<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another important topic that was covered by the panel was South Africa\u2019s mental health crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need structural changes [to solve mental health challenges] that are embedded in businesses and in the way employees are treated,\u201d said Sarah Farrell, the Managing Director at African Climate Alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example: organisations can put wellness programmes in place to tackle mental health issues in the workplace and get rid of the stigma against the illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Farai Mzungu, COO at Youth Health Africa, then highlighted that it is important to lean into the support systems around you and communicate with people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The panellists agreed that the responsibility for handling the mental health crisis requires collaboration between organisations \u2013 who must provide resources \u2013 and the individuals in question &#8211;
