South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) CEO Nazir Alli has pointed out that 1.2 million people have registered for e-tolls and “pay their bills regularly”.<\/p>\n
This is according to Eye Witness News, who quoted Alli as saying that Gauteng residents should not \u201close sight\u201d of that fact, despite a wave of criticism against the system.<\/p>\n
Transport minister, Dipuo Peters told the news agency on Wednesday (1 October) that not a single e-tolling bill had exceeded R450 a month for tagged motorists.<\/p>\n
The minister said further that the current panel, set up to assess the impact of e-tolling in Guateng, was of no concern to her department.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat panel\u2019s report is not my report. It\u2019s not the national Department of Transport\u2019s report because we did not constitute a panel to review any policy. The user-pay principle is the policy in South Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Independent Online reported that Sanral has moved the deadline for taxis to register for e-toll exemptions, from September 30, 2014, to September 1, 2015.<\/p>\n
Sanral provides exemption for those taxis who have a valid operating licence.<\/p>\n
Sanral spokesman Vusi Mona told IOL that 47,956 taxis had been registered thus far.<\/p>\n
