{"id":704157,"date":"2023-07-14T15:59:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-14T13:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=704157"},"modified":"2023-07-14T16:04:01","modified_gmt":"2023-07-14T14:04:01","slug":"red-flags-to-look-out-for-before-you-take-the-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/704157\/red-flags-to-look-out-for-before-you-take-the-job\/","title":{"rendered":"Red flags to look out for before you take the job"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>International jobs portal <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/blog\/red-flags-to-spot-before-taking-the-job\/\" target=\"_blank\">Glassdoor <\/a>has provided five of the most noteworthy red flags shown by employers when on a recruitment drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Fishbowl users &#8211; Glassdoor\u2019s online community for professionals &#8211; it\u2019s better to heed the warning signs and pass on an offer than wind up in an environment that makes you miserable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Glassdoor, when the Great Resignation was at its peak, jobseekers were quick to spot some of the major turn-offs in job listings, including phrases like \u201cmust handle stress,\u201d \u201cfast-paced environment,\u201d and \u201cwork under pressure.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most important red flags to acknowledge is a high turnover rate, said Gorick Ng, a career advisor at Harvard, such as people not staying longer than a year at the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five notable red flags to look for are listed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Referring to coworkers as family<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most mentioned red flags by respondents was the use of the word &#8216;family&#8217; to describe the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the best places to work, such as Netflix (ranked 40th on Glassdoor&#8217;s 2023 Best Places To Work List), said that they do not use the term and instead model themselves in line with a sports team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conflating long hours with passion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another phrase to be wary of: \u201cWe work long hours, not because we have to, but because we love what we do.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glassdoor said a job shouldn\u2019t consume your life, and a good employer shouldn\u2019t equate excessive hours with your love \u2014 or lack of love \u2014 for your work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you are in a job where you are required to be constantly \u2018on the clock\u2019 whether you are vacationing, taking a sick day, or it\u2019s just after hours, you may want to double-check how much time you\u2019re putting in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Unwillingness to negotiate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important for a company, as part of the hiring process, to negotiate compensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there is little willingness to do so, take notice. One respondent said a red flag is when a company says: &#8220;the experience is more important than the salary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, if a company is unwilling to share details of its benefits package, it may not be the place for you, said Glassdoor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Asking irrelevant questions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glassdoor said that questions that come up during an interview can tell you as much about the interviewer as your responses can tell them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The jobs portal said that one respondent complained about an interviewer asking only superficial questions during an interview. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would hate working for someone who would take up my time asking me if I was a colour, what colour I would be and why.
