{"id":704763,"date":"2023-07-18T09:17:36","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T07:17:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=704763"},"modified":"2023-07-18T10:01:34","modified_gmt":"2023-07-18T08:01:34","slug":"the-public-office-in-south-africa-that-earns-more-than-the-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/704763\/the-public-office-in-south-africa-that-earns-more-than-the-president\/","title":{"rendered":"The public office in South Africa that earns more than the president"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Presidency has<a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/48992-17-7-Presidency.pdf\"><strong> gazetted<\/strong><\/a> the approved latest salaries and allowances for South Africa&#8217;s various commissions, chairpersons, and councillors &#8211; including a salary bump for the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AG is taking home a salary of R5.23 million for the year, significantly higher than even the budgeted maximum for the president himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National Treasury<a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/666443\/this-is-how-much-is-budgeted-for-ramaphosas-salary-in-2023-and-beyond\/\"><strong> budgeted a sizeable increase for President Cyril Ramaphosa in February 2023<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The budget for the presidency in 2023\/24 through to 2025\/26 estimated that the president\u2019s salary will increase from R4.2 million (unchanged from 2022\/23) to R4.6 million over the period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deputy president, meanwhile, was budgeted to see an increase of R100,000 in 2023 to R3.6 million, ramping up to R4.0 million by the end of the period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It must be noted that&nbsp;<strong>the budget estimates are not the confirmed salaries of the president and deputy president<\/strong>, but rather the room given in the budget for these payouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Government salaries are proposed by the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers which are then approved or altered by the president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The presidency recently gazetted the official changes for 2023\/24, which saw the deputy president&#8217;s salary increase to R3 million for the year (vs the budgeted R3.6 million) among other increases for ministers and MPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-businesstech wp-block-embed-businesstech\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"m50HCYCf4C\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/703113\/south-africas-millionaire-politicians-how-much-ministers-mps-and-party-leaders-will-be-paid-this-year\/\">South Africa&#8217;s millionaire politicians: how much ministers, MPs and party leaders will be paid this year<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;South Africa&#8217;s millionaire politicians: how much ministers, MPs and party leaders will be paid this year&#8221; &#8212; BusinessTech\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/703113\/south-africas-millionaire-politicians-how-much-ministers-mps-and-party-leaders-will-be-paid-this-year\/embed\/#?secret=j1Z2hV8wUZ#?secret=m50HCYCf4C\" data-secret=\"m50HCYCf4C\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The president&#8217;s salary is not signed off by his office but is instead approved by parliament. President Ramaphosa&#8217;s salary was R3 million in 2022 &#8211; and he has been donating half of his salary to various charities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At R5.23 million, the Auditor General&#8217;s salary is one of the highest paid to any public office bearer &#8211; but has been even higher. Former AG, the late Kimi Makwetu, was paid R6.8 million in 2019\/20.
