Domestic airline FlySafair has launched a sale offering 30% off all domestic flights, running until midnight on Wednesday (19 July).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sale is valid on booked flights running to 30 March 2024, the group said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the airline, prospective travellers will have 15 minutes to enter the website and make a booking, using an online queuing system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This sale follows the airline offering 50,000 tickets for R9 earlier this year in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FlySafair operated its first scheduled domestic flight on 16 October 2014 and has since grown to be a significant player in the domestic air travel space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, the airline now operates over 150 flights a day, connecting all major South African cities with additional connections to Mauritius and Zanzibar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company has been consistently expanding, with the International Air Services Council (IASC) recently granting FlySafair three additional routes for 2023 to Windhoek, Zanzibar and Harare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FlySafair currently holds roughly 60% of the domestic air travel market<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airline industry<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning of 2022, the liquidation of Comair, a parent company that managed Kulula.com and served as British Airways’ domestic partner in South Africa, resulted in a significant reduction of 40% in domestic airline capacity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consequently, ticket prices surged, and other airlines were compelled to quickly increase their capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This trend is, however, coming to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jonathan Ayache, the CEO of the competitor airline Lift, said it is now the opposite in South Africa, with an oversupply of seats and low demand, especially due to seasonal changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lower ticket prices, although good for travellers, have also raised concern in the industry. Ayache said that there is a need for companies to grow but also to act responsibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that dominant airlines are providing tickets below the cost of operating flights and should be investigated by the Competition Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
