{"id":705113,"date":"2023-07-19T10:38:34","date_gmt":"2023-07-19T08:38:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=705113"},"modified":"2023-07-19T10:40:12","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T08:40:12","slug":"good-news-for-south-africa-as-inflation-eases-dramatically","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/705113\/good-news-for-south-africa-as-inflation-eases-dramatically\/","title":{"rendered":"Good news for South Africa as inflation eases dramatically"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Stats SA has published the latest inflation figures for South Africa, showing that headline inflation cooled from 6.3% in May to 5.4% in June. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>June&#8217;s inflation figure is now back below the upper limit (6%) of the South African Reserve Bank\u2019s monetary policy target range. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rate in June is the lowest reading since October 2021, when the rate was 5.0%. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/cpi-May-2023.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/cpi-May-2023-1024x690.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-705115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/cpi-May-2023-1024x690.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/cpi-May-2023-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/cpi-May-2023-768x518.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/cpi-May-2023.jpg 1185w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The statistic body added that the 0.9 percentage point drop in headline inflation between May and June is the biggest drop since May 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 12 main categories covered by the consumer price index (CPI), six saw a drop in annual inflation, five saw an increase, and one remained unchanged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Annual goods inflation dropped from 8.0% in May to 6.3% in June, whilst services inflation dropped slightly from 4.6% in May to 4.5% in June. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Core inflation (inflation excluding food and fuel) was also slightly lower at 5.0%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Some good news for food <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Annual inflation for food and non-alcoholic beverages (NAB) slowed for the third month in a row, dropping from 11.9% in May to 11.0% in June.
