Residents in the City of Joburg have been urged to avoid the central business district after a major gas explosion caused extensive damage and left people injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to ER24, City of Johannesburg EMS, Disaster Management and several other services responded to Johannesburg CBD after receiving reports of an underground gas explosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On scene, medics and rescue personnel discovered several overturned vehicles along the road, which seemed to have been split wide open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Medics set up a triage area a safe distance away while Fire and Disaster Services evacuated the general area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Initial reports from the scene showed that several people had sustained minor to moderate injuries. The patients were treated for their injuries and later transported by various services to nearby hospitals,” the group said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exact details surrounding this incident are unknown, but the relevant authorities are on the scene for further investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi described the situation as “chaotic” and urged people to steer clear of the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Executive Mayor in the City of Johannesburg, Kabelo Gwamanda, noted that roads along Bree street in the CBD were closed off, including Bree & Simmons, Bree & Harrison, and Loveday street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigations into the matter are ongoing with City Power, the Joburg Roads Agency and other city officials on the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gas company, Egoli Gas, said that it does not believe the cause of the explosion to be related to gas pipelines or a leak.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our network has experienced no pressure loss, which indicates the gas pipelines are intact. Our customers in the area continue to receive gas uninterrupted,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Initial reports have shown the collapse in the road to be mainly in the center. Our gas pipelines are located in the road servitudes on the sides of the road. Our teams are on site investigating for any gas leaks, they have found none so far.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
