The Freedom Front Plus collected 80,000 signatures on an online petition against e-tolls, the party said on Friday.<\/p>\n
“We were quite surprised,” FF Plus MP Anton Alberts told the Gauteng E-Tolls Advisory Panel at the provincial legislature.<\/p>\n
The petition had initially collected 120,000 signatures but 40,000 were cut out after auditing as it was found that some people had filled out their names twice.<\/p>\n
People of all races had signed the anti-tolls document.<\/p>\n
“[The e-tolls] have made people stand together in a unified fashion that we as a country have never seen before,” said Alberts.<\/p>\n
Gauteng premier David Makhura established the panel on July 17 to assess the social and economic impact of e-tolls.<\/p>\n
The review panel is intended to examine the economic and social impact of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project and the electronic tolling system set up to fund it.<\/p>\n
The panel is expected to present its findings to Makhura at the end of November.<\/p>\n
