Semigration is becoming highly popular in South Africa, and despite Gauteng remaining the economic heartbeat of the country, there are still several sectors hiring in the Western Cape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on the Property Pod<\/a>, Steve Brookes, CEO of Balwin Properties, said that semigration, particularly to the Western Cape, should not be overstated, as Gauteng still has the lion’s share of jobs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSemigration is a fancy word, but there are only so many people who can afford to move and only so many jobs in the Western Cape,” Brookes said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, several experts at REDi Recruitment say that finding work in several semigration hotspots, including Cape Town, has been made easier through remote work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natalie Lotter, Engineering Recruiter at the REDi Holbourne Group, said that the Western Cape has enough jobs to keep up with demand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As Cape Town remains a highly popular destination, Durban, Plettenberg Bay and Knysna are also favourable. We are seeing that people are moving to other cities and can work remotely from that destination and keep their current position. Therefore not all the pressure is put on Cape Town to provide the jobs,” Lotter said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She noted that the main appeal of Cape Town is how well-run it is and the lifestyle that it offers to families, couples and individuals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that more companies have their head offices in Cape Town, indicating the need for capacity for growth and larger teams to be centred in the coastal city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, she remained steadfast on the advantages of remote work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In terms of promotion and being based at a head office, this is not a major concern for employees as the shift to remote and hybrid working has created other channels of recognising and monitoring employees’ success and reaching of their targets,” she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

REDi’s Nicole Ramos also said that employees crave flexibility, and they are more focused on their lifestyle and being with their families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“So, at times, the job is less important to them as the need for hybrid or more flexi-time is prioritised,” Ramos said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industries hiring <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Simonne Adcock, Generalist Senior Recruiter at REDi Recruitment, said that a possible drawback to Cape Town is the increased cost of living. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Salaries across cities have become more competitive; from what we notice, Cape Town salaries are similar to those offered in Johannesburg; however, one’s\u00a0lifestyle\u00a0costs more,” Adcock said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this in mind, it is crucial that one has a job if they plan to semigrate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
