{"id":711436,"date":"2023-08-16T11:25:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-16T09:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=711436"},"modified":"2023-08-16T11:57:10","modified_gmt":"2023-08-16T09:57:10","slug":"spelling-error-on-new-south-african-bank-notes-finally-put-to-rest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/711436\/spelling-error-on-new-south-african-bank-notes-finally-put-to-rest\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Spelling error&#8217; on new South African bank notes finally put to rest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Pan South African Language Board (PANSALB) has resolved that the&nbsp;Xitsonga spelling on the new R100 bank note&nbsp;is indeed correct and that the spelling on the old notes was the mistake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to SABC News, PANSALB has concluded its consultation with the Xitsonga-speaking community in Malamulele and Giyani communities in Limpopo, putting to rest the spelling debacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Xitsonga-speaking South Africans&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/686369\/spelling-error-flagged-on-new-south-african-banknotes\/\">flagged an apparent spelling error<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;in the South African Reserve Bank\u2019s&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/684701\/reserve-bank-launches-new-banknotes-and-coins-for-south-africa\/\">newest banknotes<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;in May 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the R100 note, the Xitsonga translation of \u201cReserve Bank\u201d was changed, with the second \u2018N\u2019 in Bangi Nkulu dropped. The word now reads as Bangi Kulu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/bank-note-error.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"521\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/bank-note-error-1024x521.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-711456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/bank-note-error-1024x521.webp 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/bank-note-error-300x153.webp 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/bank-note-error-768x391.webp 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/bank-note-error.webp 1300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some Xitsonga speakers said that this is incorrect and the previous version of \u201cBangi Nkulu\u201d was the accepted form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pan South African Language Board, responsible for the translation, disagreed, saying the extra \u2018N\u2019 was incorrect on the old notes \u2013 explaining that the \u2018N\u2019 is only used when referring to a person and not an institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Arnold Mushwana, chair of the Xitsonga National Language Body, reiterated that the current notes are correct, and the old notes were misspelt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere was an error on the old banknotes; currently, the new ones are correctly written,\u201d Mushwana said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reserve Bank governor Lesetja Kganyago also said that the new print of South African banknotes does not contain a spelling error but has corrected an error that existed before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SABC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabcnews.com\/sabcnews\/pansalb-clears-xitsonga-spelling-on-r100-bank-note\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> that a former language lecturer from the University of South Africa, Paul Nkuna attended the final consultations in Giyani and confirmed Mushwana and Kganyago&#8217;s conclusion that the new spelling without an N is the correct one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nkuna noted that the contention surrounding the right spelling of the Xitsonga translation of \u201cReserve Bank\u201d among mother-tongue speakers was a result of interactions with missionaries years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is the one without an N that is correct.
