The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) says it is not retrenching any workers.<\/p>\n
This follows a claim by worker union Cosatu that the roads agency had issued retrenchment letters to 1,200 employees.<\/p>\n
According to EWN, Cosatu\u2019s Gauteng Provincial Secretary Dumisani Dakile said he has proof Sanral sent out retrenchment letters to workers on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have confirmed with more than 1,200 workers, as we speak now, many of the workers at Sanral have received retrenchment notices,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
However, Sanral said the retrenchment claim is untrue, and cannot even be possible.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is very mischievous of Cosatu to claim that Sanral is retrenching 1,200 workers when we only have a staff complement of 283,\u201d said Vusi Mona, General Manager of Communications.<\/p>\n
Sanral said that the Electronic Toll Company (ETC) – which is a Sanral service provider – is “downscaling its operations in line with its business model”.<\/p>\n
In September, the Citizen newspaper reported that ETC advised employees of possible job retrenchments in terms of Section 189 of the Labour Relations Act.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe business landscape in which ETC operates is rapidly changing and necessitates for structure changes within department,\u201d the group was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe structural change is required to ensure that we improve the company\u2019s effectiveness and efficiency,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n
Sanral insisted it could not be held accountable for the business decisions made by its service providers.<\/p>\n
“Service providers to Cosatu are not the federation and when they retrench, for whatever reason, that can\u2019t be equated to Cosatu retrenching its employees,” Mona said.<\/p>\n
