{"id":711680,"date":"2023-08-17T10:24:06","date_gmt":"2023-08-17T08:24:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=711680"},"modified":"2023-08-17T10:25:05","modified_gmt":"2023-08-17T08:25:05","slug":"good-news-for-braai-lovers-in-south-africa-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/711680\/good-news-for-braai-lovers-in-south-africa-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Good news for braai lovers in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Food prices increased at the slowest pace in at least nine months as the cost of cooking oil plunged, Bloomberg\u2019s Shisa Nyama Index shows, vindicating the central bank\u2019s decision to leave its benchmark rate unchanged after overall inflation slowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cost of a basket of goods in the index, which has been compiled since November and is designed to show the price of a traditional South African backyard barbecue in townships and rural areas, rose 10% in July from a year earlier.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braai-prices-August-bloomberg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"814\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braai-prices-August-bloomberg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-711682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braai-prices-August-bloomberg.jpg 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braai-prices-August-bloomberg-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/braai-prices-August-bloomberg-768x459.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Food prices have remained sticky in many parts of the world because of&nbsp;macroeconomic factors&nbsp;such as weak exchange rates, extreme weather and high energy prices. South Africans have also had to contend with the impact of daily power outages that have raised output costs for food producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South African annual food inflation&nbsp;cooled&nbsp;to 11.1% in June from 12% a month earlier, while overall price growth eased to 5.4% from 6.3%, data from the government statistics agency show. That led the central bank to pause its longest phase of monetary-policy tightening since 2006 on July 20, when it left its benchmark borrowing rate at 8.25%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crunching data from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity group, Bloomberg\u2019s index tracks the prices of some of the key ingredients in a shisa nyama \u2014 potatoes, cooking oil, corn meal, onions, carrots, tomatoes, frozen chicken portions, beef and wors \u2014 a type of sausage made from a variety of ground meat offcuts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More expensive onions and potatoes were the biggest contributors to the year-on-year increase in the Shisa Nyama Index, with the cost of 10 kilograms of the vegetables soaring 81% and 40%, respectively.
