{"id":711708,"date":"2023-08-17T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-17T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=711708"},"modified":"2023-08-17T16:15:24","modified_gmt":"2023-08-17T14:15:24","slug":"what-south-africans-spend-on-food-vs-the-usa-australia-the-uk-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/711708\/what-south-africans-spend-on-food-vs-the-usa-australia-the-uk-and-more\/","title":{"rendered":"What South Africans spend on food vs the USA, Australia, the UK, and more"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In South Africa, stubbornly high food inflation has put added financial pressure on consumers, and a recent study shows that, on average, South Africans spend more on food than most African countries \u2013 second only to Egypt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is according to a new report published by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.picodi.com\/za\/bargain-hunting\/spendings-on-food-2023?report=1\" target=\"_blank\">Picodi.com<\/a>, which analysed how much money citizens of different countries spend on groceries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This analysis looked at the average spending across all income categories. It included 105 countries, using the latest household food and non-alcoholic beverages consumption statistics from Euromonitor and the relevant official government websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collected data shows that, depending on the country, grocery spending can vary from a few per cent to over half of consumer spending. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, less than a tenth of spending on food and non-alcoholic beverages consumed at home can be found in countries such as the USA (6.7%), Singapore (8.4%), the UK (8.7%), Switzerland (9.9%), and Australia (10%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>South Africa ranked 50th out of 105 countries in this ranking \u2013 food and non-alcoholic beverages account for 21.3% of consumer spending on goods and services.<\/strong> This result is similar to the one in Saudi Arabia (20.5%), Lebanon (21.0%) and Oman (22.6%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the countries included in the ranking, the highest percentage of grocery spending can be found in Nigeria, Myanmar and Kenya \u2013 59%, 56.6% and 56.1%, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-549x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-711714\" width=\"587\" height=\"1095\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-549x1024.jpg 549w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-161x300.jpg 161w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-768x1431.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-824x1536.jpg 824w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-1099x2048.jpg 1099w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image.jpg 1160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>How much money is spent on groceries in Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite spending a smaller portion of their salaries on groceries, South Africans spend a larger amount on food than other African countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The highest grocery spending in Africa can be found in Egypt, with its citizens spending, on average, $114 (R2,185) per month on groceries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is then followed by South Africa in second and Kenya in third.
