{"id":712068,"date":"2023-08-21T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-21T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=712068"},"modified":"2023-08-18T17:01:41","modified_gmt":"2023-08-18T15:01:41","slug":"how-much-kings-queens-and-other-traditional-leaders-get-paid-in-south-africa-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/712068\/how-much-kings-queens-and-other-traditional-leaders-get-paid-in-south-africa-2\/","title":{"rendered":"How much Kings, Queens, and other traditional leaders get paid in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially declared the salaries and allowances of traditional leaders and members of traditional houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of Traditional Affairs is responsible for overseeing traditional affairs and supporting the development of traditional communities in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The South African&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.za\/about-government\/government-system\/traditional-leadership#leadership\" target=\"_blank\">government<\/a>&nbsp;said the National House of Traditional Leaders (NHTL) seeks to promote the role of traditional leadership within the country and&nbsp;<strong>act as an advisory board to the national government<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are provincial houses of traditional leaders in seven provinces in South Africa, in addition to the national house \u2013 including in the Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and the North West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional leaders are instrumental in the strategy for rural development, and the government has implemented several pieces of legislation to ensure their necessary contribution to societal progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional councils can further be involved in development matters and are allowed to enter into partnerships and service-delivery agreements with the government in all spheres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa\u2019s latest&nbsp;gazetted&nbsp;remuneration covers a wide range of roles varied between full and part-time positions in both national and provincial houses of traditional leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognised kings and queens are permitted to collect an annual salary as determined by the president and based on recommendations by the Independent Commission for Remuneration of Public Office Bearers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the recommendations, <strong>traditional leaders and members of traditional houses will receive a remuneration increase of 3%. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: NHTL&nbsp;= National House of Traditional Leaders | PHTL&nbsp;= Provincial House of Traditional Leaders<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><div class=\"table-responsive\"><table class=\"table\"><thead><tr><th>Position<\/th><th>Annual Salary<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>King\/Queen<\/td><td><strong>R1 315 429<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Principal Traditional Leader: PTL<\/td><td>R1 210 199<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Chairperson: NHTL<\/td><td>R990 106<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Full-Time Chairperson: PHTL<\/td><td>R815 490<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Deputy Chairperson: NHTL<\/td><td>R757 282<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Full-Time Deputy Chairperson: PHTL<\/td><td>R698 876<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Full-Time Member: NHTL<\/td><td>R440 393<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Full-Time Member: PHTL<\/td><td>R377 516<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Senior Traditional Leader<\/td><td>R287 422<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Headmen\/Headwomen<\/td><td>R123 508<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The King\u2019s salary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.za\/speeches\/president-cyril-ramaphosa-recognises-prince-misizulu-king-amazulu-16-mar-2022-0000\" target=\"_blank\">March<\/a>&nbsp;2022, President Cyril Ramaphosa recognised Misuzulu Sinqobile Zulu as the King of the AmaZulu Kingship, making the country now have eight officially recognised kings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma revealed in a parliamentary Q&amp;A last year the salaries paid to each of the country\u2019s kings over the last five years based on the Independent Commission for Remuneration of Public Office Bearers&#8217;
