{"id":713364,"date":"2023-08-24T12:36:11","date_gmt":"2023-08-24T10:36:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=713364"},"modified":"2023-08-24T12:36:11","modified_gmt":"2023-08-24T10:36:11","slug":"momentum-sees-post-covid-earnings-boost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/713364\/momentum-sees-post-covid-earnings-boost\/","title":{"rendered":"Momentum sees post-Covid earnings boost"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Momentum Metropolitan says its earnings and profits have increased following the conclusion of the Covid-19 pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a trading statement for the year ended 30 June 2023, the group benefitted from improved mortality due to the modest impact of Covid-19 during the period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earnings were also furthered by a strong improvement in investment variances, which saw strong yield curves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, earnings were partially dampened by a deterioration in lapse experience in Metropolitan Life, Momentum Insure underwriting and a decline in investment in the group&#8217;s venture capital funds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the group&#8217;s earnings also included positive adjustments to the carrying amount of the group&#8217;s remaining interest in Aditya Birla Health Insurance (ABHI) after the dilution of the group\u2019s investment, offset by the impairment of goodwill in Momentum Insure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, the group&#8217;s earnings per share are expected to increase by 15% to 25% from 260.6 cents in FY2022 to 300 to 325 cents in FY2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Headline earnings per share also jumped between 2% and 7% from 297.3 cents in FY2022 to 303 and 318 in FY2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group will release its full financial and operating results for the period on 13 September 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group&#8217;s expectations are as follows: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><div class=\"table-responsive\"><table class=\"table\"><tbody><tr><td>Financials <\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>FY2022 (cents)<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>FY2023 (cents)<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>% change<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Earnings per share<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">260.6<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">300 to 325<\/td><td><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">15% to 25%<\/mark><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Headline earnings per share<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">297.3<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">303 to 318<\/td><td><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">2% to 7%<\/mark><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Normalised headline earnings per share<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">287.2<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">330 to 350<\/td><td><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">15% to 22%<\/mark><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>New CEO<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group also has a new CEO, Jeanette Marais, who took over the role at the start of this month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marais joined in 2018 as Deputy CEO, leading Momentum Investments, Momentum Distribution Services, Consult by Momentum and Momentum Mone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The normalised headline earnings of Momentum Investments increased from R271 in FY2018 to R940 million in FY2022 under her leadership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She replaced Hillie Meyer, who was appointed CEO in 2018 for a five-year fixed term.
