{"id":714016,"date":"2023-08-28T08:03:40","date_gmt":"2023-08-28T06:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=714016"},"modified":"2023-08-28T08:31:59","modified_gmt":"2023-08-28T06:31:59","slug":"a-major-problem-for-eskom-rears-its-ugly-head","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/714016\/a-major-problem-for-eskom-rears-its-ugly-head\/","title":{"rendered":"A major problem for Eskom rears its ugly head"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa\u2019s electricity distribution system is \u201can albatross\u201d beset by fighting between the national power utility and municipalities as the government takes steps to stabilise the grid, according to the electricity minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>State-owned Eskom has focused on improving the performance of its mainly coal-fired power stations, which have become unreliable due to neglected maintenance, resulting in record electricity outages that curb economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But <strong>the networks that connect to customers have become a growing challenge<\/strong>, electricity minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said Sunday in an online briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe one area that remains an albatross is the distribution side,\u201d he said. That includes disputes between Eskom and municipalities that owe the utility about R62 billion in arrears for electricity they sold to customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa has taken measures to add generation from independent producers through government auctions, though the process has been delayed and some projects held up due to grid constraints. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some businesses that can afford it are building their own generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Financially distressed municipalities are unable to maintain local distribution assets, which makes the equipment more prone to breakdowns, Ramokgopa said.
