{"id":716852,"date":"2023-09-07T12:45:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-07T10:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=716852"},"modified":"2023-09-07T14:56:30","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T12:56:30","slug":"big-questions-over-r33-million-trevor-noah-tourism-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/716852\/big-questions-over-r33-million-trevor-noah-tourism-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Big questions over R33 million Trevor Noah tourism deal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Portfolio Committee on Tourism has questioned deals between the Department of Tourism with comedian and former Daily Show host Trevor Noah and rugby player Siya Kolisi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Committee received a briefing on the performance of South African Tourism in Q3 and Q4 of the 2022\/23 financial year, raising concerns about understanding and overspending across several projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chairperson of the Committee, Tandi Mahambehlala, also questioned Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille on several topics, including her announcement that the former Daily Show host will feature in a five-minute promotion video that will cost South Africans R33 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De Lille stated that the R33 million was a contribution from the Tourism Business Council of Southern Africa and would not affect South African coffers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Mahambehlala said that the Noah deal was similar to the recent controversial R1 billion Tottenham Hotspur marketing campaign and called on the entity not to pursue it any further.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-businesstech wp-block-embed-businesstech\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"VP4WPAFB8R\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/677043\/sa-tourism-cancels-r1-billion-spurs-sponsorship-deal\/\">SA Tourism cancels R1 billion Spurs sponsorship deal<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Busy time for both <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parliament&#8217;s questions come amid a busy period for both Noah and Kolisi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noah is currently on a major South African tour, with shows in Durban and Pretoria taking place over the next two weeks &#8211; the Cape Town leg of the tour has already been completed.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was also announced in June that Noah had signed a deal with Spotify for a weekly podcast series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kolisi, on the other hand, will captain South Africa at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, having returned from a serious knee injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Africa will kickstart their defence of the title against Scotland on Sunday, 10 September, with millions of South Africans expected to tune in &#8211;
