Eskom will start rolling blackouts countrywide on Sunday due to a loss of capacity at its Majuba power station in Mpumalanga, it said.<\/p>\n
A crack in a coal storage silo on Saturday afternoon caused the loss of 1800MW, it said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The power shortage was expected to last the entire week and blackouts would happen between 8am and 10pm.<\/p>\n
The silo, which stores over 10,000 tons of coal, cracked on Saturday afternoon. This affected coal supplies to all six units at the power station. It was generating 1300MW.<\/p>\n
“Teams are in the process of dispatching mobile coal feeders to site. In the unlikely event that this contingency is unsuccessful, it may impact the full supply from the power station,” the organisation said.<\/p>\n
Eskom engineers were investigating the cause of the crack. Power outage schedules were available on Eskom’s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n The coal storage silo at Eskom\u2019s Majuba power station in Mpumalanga has collapsed, the parastatal said on Sunday.<\/p>\n \u201cThe silo ruptured or cracked and so employees were evacuated\u2026 and it just collapsed,\u201d Eskom spokesman Andrew Etzinger said.<\/p>\n \u201cThe conveyer belt systems, which feeds coal to the power station, were damaged and therefore we can\u2019t get coal into the power station.\u201d<\/p>\n Before the collapse Majuba supplied 3600MW, roughly 10 percent of the country\u2019s electricity capacity, Etzinger said.<\/p>\n He said Eskom would bring mobile coal conveyer belts from other stations to Majuba as a temporary solution, but this would take time.<\/p>\n Earlier, the power utility said a crack in a coal storage silo on Saturday afternoon caused the loss of 1800MW of Majuba\u2019s total capacity.<\/p>\n Eskom said rolling blackouts were expected across the country on Sunday and the entire week.
