{"id":724504,"date":"2023-10-12T10:17:55","date_gmt":"2023-10-12T08:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=724504"},"modified":"2023-10-12T10:17:55","modified_gmt":"2023-10-12T08:17:55","slug":"another-semigration-shift-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/724504\/another-semigration-shift-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Another semigration shift in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The 2022 Census from Stats SA has thrown another spanner in the works regarding the semigration narrative in South Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Semigration refers to the internal movement of people in a country from one province to another. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Western Cape has often been cited as the semigration hotspot of South Africa, as residents, especially from Gauteng, move in search of better service delivery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remote work, popularised during the Covid-19 pandemic, has been cited as a reason for the increase in semigration as professionals no longer have to live in the hustle and bustle of Gauteng. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there has also been a pushback over this claim, as Gauteng remains the dominant province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSemigration is a fancy word, but&nbsp;there are only so many people who can afford to move and only so many jobs in the Western Cape,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/property\/694103\/the-big-semigration-issue-for-the-western-cape\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steve Brookes, CEO of Balwin Properties, said. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, looking at Stats SA&#8217;s revisions to provincial GDP growth numbers, <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/722314\/south-africas-semigration-lie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Isaah Mhlanga<\/a>, Chief Economist at RMB, said that Gauteng&#8217;s economy saw the largest revision of R449 billion from 2013 to 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was far greater than the R210 billion revision for the Western Cape. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/semi-rmb-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"890\" height=\"408\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/semi-rmb-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-722316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/semi-rmb-2.jpg 890w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/semi-rmb-2-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/semi-rmb-2-768x352.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cDespite the apparent semigration phenomenon to the Western Cape from Gauteng, the revisions to provincial GDP statistics suggest that the proportion of the Gauteng economy remained relatively unchanged at 33.1% in 2022 from 33.2% in 2013,\u201d Mhlanga said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn the other hand, the contribution of the Western Cape to national GDP moderated to 13.9% in 2022 from 14.1% in 2013.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gauteng&#8217;s average growth rate was also 1.5% from 2013 to 2019, higher than the Western Cape&#8217;s 1.4%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is possible that in the period since the pandemic, there could be some changes in these growth rates, but up to 2019,&nbsp;the reality, as shown by the provincial GDP figures, still points to Gauteng being the fastest-growing province followed by the Western Cape,\u201d Mhlanga noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Who&#8217;s moving? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, migration data from Census 2022 paints a different picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gauteng is still the nation&#8217;s migration hotspot, with a total net migration of nearly 400,000 from 2011 to 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Western Cape is in second place, with a net migration of just under 295,000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Limpopo had negative net migration over the 11 years. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/stats-sa-new-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/stats-sa-new--1024x439.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-724506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/stats-sa-new--1024x439.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/stats-sa-new--300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/stats-sa-new--768x329.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/stats-sa-new-.jpg 1227w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: Stats SA<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>However, looking more closely at Gauteng and the Western Cape, it becomes clear that <strong>Gauteng is more of an immigration hub &#8211;
