{"id":725282,"date":"2023-10-17T06:56:17","date_gmt":"2023-10-17T04:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=725282"},"modified":"2023-10-17T06:59:38","modified_gmt":"2023-10-17T04:59:38","slug":"food-insecurity-warning-for-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/725282\/food-insecurity-warning-for-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Food insecurity warning for South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The number of people unable to meet their minimum food consumption needs in South Africa is expected to marginally decline to just under one in two by 2025, according to the World Data Lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The firm, which conducted research for Shoprite Holdings Ltd.\u2019s food index, estimates that 49% of South Africans will be food insecure in two years\u2019 time, down from 52% at the height of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Western Cape, Free State and Eastern Cape provinces are expected to show the biggest progress in addressing hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/403098211.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"934\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/403098211.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-725284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/403098211.jpg 934w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/403098211-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/403098211-768x493.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 934px) 100vw, 934px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While \u201cthe modelling shows an improvement by 2025, the reality is that in two years\u2019 time, just under half the population will still be struggling with hunger,\u201d said Sanjeev Raghubir, Shoprite\u2019s sustainability and corporate social investment head. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why we must urgently escalate the rate of people escaping food insecurity.
