{"id":72826,"date":"2014-11-08T00:05:48","date_gmt":"2014-11-07T22:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=72826"},"modified":"2014-11-07T17:35:03","modified_gmt":"2014-11-07T15:35:03","slug":"gimmicks-that-took-south-africans-for-a-ride","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/72826\/gimmicks-that-took-south-africans-for-a-ride\/","title":{"rendered":"Gimmicks that took South Africans for a ride"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa has produced some of the world\u2019s best scientists and innovations, including doctor Chris Barnard who performed the first ever heart transplant, and Sasol\u2019s oil-from-coal refinery.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, South Africa is also known for some dubious products and inventions which end up costing people lots of money.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the things which South Africans spent a small fortune on without any sound scientific evidence to prove the products worked.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72828\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Hologram-bracelet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72828\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72828\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Hologram-bracelet.jpg\" alt=\"Hologram bracelet\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Hologram-bracelet.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Hologram-bracelet-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-72828\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hologram bracelet<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Hologram bracelets<\/h3>\n<p>A few years ago hologram bracelets were all the rage, with manufacturers and vendors claiming that the holographic technology \u201cresonated with and responded to the natural energy field of the body\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>These hologram bracelets were also said to improve sporting performance \u2013 and some high-profile sports personalities like Springbok Morne Steyn and former springbok Os du Randt promoted their own brand of \u201cholographic technology\u201d bracelets.<\/p>\n<p>The demand for these bracelets plummeted after Power Balance, a big player in the market, admitted that \u201cthere is no credible scientific evidence that supports our claims\u201d.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_72830\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/APS.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72830\" class=\"size-full wp-image-72830\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/APS.jpg\" alt=\"APS\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/APS.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/APS-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-72830\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">APS<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">APS (Action Potential Simulation)<\/h3>\n<p>In 1991 South African Gervan Lubbe was credited with inventing the Action Potential Stimulation (APS) device, which Lubbe said \u201celectronically stimulates the body\u2019s natural nerve impulses to relieve pain\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Lubbe received some accolades for his APS device, and many South Africans spent their hard-earned money to purchase one of these devices.<\/p>\n<p>There was only one problem \u2013 no widely accepted scientific evidence that the APS device worked as promised.<\/p>\n<p>On 22 March 2012 Gervan Lubbe was sentenced to an effective 20 years in prison in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gfkRFobzF38?rel=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Matter Orientation System<\/h3>\n<p>Danie Krugel invented the Matter Orientation System (aka Krugel Theory Tester), which he said could track down a person\u2019s location by using the DNA of the person (like a strand of hair).<\/p>\n<p>Krugel received lots of media exposure for his invention, with many people reporting that the device worked. Thousands of South Africans paid R500 for dried plants which would produce thick milk.<\/p>\n<p>Nieuwoudt paid R10 per envelope, or R100 per week, to producers who sent him a teaspoon of the culture.<\/p>\n<p>At the time Nieuwoudt claimed that the dried cultures were for a skin cream product, but this product never materialised. Investigators discovered tons of dried milk-culture rotting in a shed, and argued that it was just a cover for a pyramid scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The pyramid scheme ultimately collapsed, and Nieuwoudt was sequestrated.
