{"id":731389,"date":"2023-11-15T15:41:14","date_gmt":"2023-11-15T13:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=731389"},"modified":"2023-11-15T15:41:14","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T13:41:14","slug":"rand-rallies-as-investors-pile-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/731389\/rand-rallies-as-investors-pile-in\/","title":{"rendered":"Rand rallies as investors pile in"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa\u2019s rand extended gains on Wednesday (15 November), heading for its biggest two-day advance against the dollar since July, as a rally in government bonds lured foreign investors back to the country\u2019s debt.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rally, sparked on Tuesday by cool US inflation data that raised optimism the Federal Reserve is getting closer to a rates pivot, may extend into the close of the year: The South African currency is more likely to end 2024 below the current level of around 18.16 per dollar than above, according to Bloomberg\u2019s forecast model based on options pricing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rand gained 0.4% to 18.1566 per dollar by 2:50 p.m. in Johannesburg, bringing gains in the past two sessions to 3.1%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These four charts show why South Africa\u2019s rand may end the year on a strong note:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Volatility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Implied volatility levels are falling, suggesting options traders anticipate price swings to moderate in the coming weeks and months. One-month risk reversals \u2014 the premium of options to sell the currency over those to buy them \u2014 are around a six-month low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Risk-reversals.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"814\" height=\"457\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Risk-reversals.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-731393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Risk-reversals.jpg 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Risk-reversals-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Risk-reversals-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bond Demand<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tuesday saw the strongest demand from local banks at a government bond auction since July 2021, and foreign investors are also returning to the market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Non-residents bought most South African bonds on a net basis on Tuesday in four months, according to JSE Ltd. data. Inflows this quarter amount to 17.5 billion rand ($965 million), according to JSE data tracking settled trades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Bond-demand.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"814\" height=\"457\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Bond-demand.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-731395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Bond-demand.jpg 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Bond-demand-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Bond-demand-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Carry Trade<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lower volatility and yields among the highest in emerging markets are boosting the rand\u2019s appeal for investors who borrow at low interest rates to invest in assets that provide a higher rate of return, known as the carry trade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dollar-rand carry trade has returned 4.7% this quarter after losing 8.2% in the first nine months of the year.
