{"id":7362,"date":"2012-03-06T15:53:14","date_gmt":"2012-03-06T15:53:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=7362"},"modified":"2012-03-06T15:55:08","modified_gmt":"2012-03-06T15:55:08","slug":"telkom-employees-plead-for-job-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/7362\/telkom-employees-plead-for-job-security\/","title":{"rendered":"Telkom workers plead for job security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of <a title=\"Company Information\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227037-Telkom\" target=\"_blank\">Telkom<\/a> employees appealed to the competition authorities on Tuesday to take their job security into account before penalising their employer, trade union Solidarity said.<\/p>\n<p>The Competition Commission has asked the Competition Tribunal to find Telkom guilty of excessive pricing and market abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Solidarity said that, from media reports, Telkom&#8217;s fine could be as high as R4.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The trade union asked the commission to take heed of the pleas of more than 3500 Telkom employees and their families, more than 17,000 people, before announcing the fine.<\/p>\n<p>A delegation of Telkom employees presented the written pleas to the commission.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It would be a tragedy if thousands of Telkom employees had to suffer the consequences of something they had nothing to do with,&#8221; Solidarity spokesman Marius Croucamp said.<\/p>\n<p>A huge fine would deal a serious blow to Telkom&#8217;s profitability, possibly forcing large-scale retrenchments, he said.
