{"id":743955,"date":"2024-01-19T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-19T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=743955"},"modified":"2024-01-19T13:18:07","modified_gmt":"2024-01-19T11:18:07","slug":"when-south-africa-will-finally-turn-the-corner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/743955\/when-south-africa-will-finally-turn-the-corner\/","title":{"rendered":"When South Africa will finally turn the corner"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s fiscal position is expected to improve, but not in the next two years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2024 is set to be a busy year for South Africa, with the general election coming up this year &#8211; even if it experiences a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/743775\/big-question-over-south-africas-extra-public-holiday-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">minor delay.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Polling suggests that the ANC is unlikely to win an outright majority and will require a coalition to remain in power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the risk of the ruling party losing power remains small, Bank of America (BofA) said that the slim possibility means that the upcoming elections will be uncertain, turbulent, and noisy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, with the ANC staying in power with the help of smaller partners, the status quo on economic policy is expected to be maintained. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/elections-businesstech.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/elections-businesstech-1024x375.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-743965\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/elections-businesstech-1024x375.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/elections-businesstech-300x110.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/elections-businesstech-768x281.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/elections-businesstech.jpg 1368w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In addition, the fiscal outlook remains weak, largely due to expenditure containment pressures, as well as Eskom support still being part of the fiscal framework until 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2024 budget is set to take place in 2024, and besides no new taxes, it is unlikely to contain much good news. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BofA said that weak state-owned enterprises will likely receive higher transfers, especially Transnet, whose port and rail failures are expected to result in widespread job losses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business-opinion\/743827\/jobs-bloodbath-warning-for-south-africa-10000-positions-on-the-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Union of Mineworkers (NUM)<\/a> said that close to 10,000 jobs could be lost by the end of this month as mining companies start to give retrenchment notices amid falling commodity prices and the inability to export their goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The social relief grant is also expected to be made permanent beyond 2025 despite questions over its affordability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-businesstech wp-block-embed-businesstech\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"KwqOON51mh\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business-opinion\/739055\/more-calls-to-hike-taxes-in-south-africa-to-fund-grants\/\">More calls to hike taxes in South Africa to fund grants<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;More calls to hike taxes in South Africa to fund grants&#8221; &#8212; BusinessTech\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business-opinion\/739055\/more-calls-to-hike-taxes-in-south-africa-to-fund-grants\/embed\/#?secret=wTEgrf2Jfd#?secret=KwqOON51mh\" data-secret=\"KwqOON51mh\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Wage bill spending is also expected to hurt the government&#8217;s purse strings.
