{"id":747380,"date":"2024-01-31T16:00:55","date_gmt":"2024-01-31T14:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=747380"},"modified":"2024-01-31T16:02:16","modified_gmt":"2024-01-31T14:02:16","slug":"good-news-for-braai-lovers-in-south-africa-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/747380\/good-news-for-braai-lovers-in-south-africa-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Good news for braai lovers in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The cost of a traditional South African barbecue increased moderately in January after a sharp drop the prior month, confirming the central bank\u2019s forecasts that beleaguered consumers may continue to see elevated food prices ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bloomberg\u2019s Shisa Nyama Index shows the average price rise of a backyard barbecue was 6.2% this month on an annual basis &#8211; the same as December but <strong>significantly less than the 10% recorded in November <\/strong>and <strong>lower than the 8.5% year-on-year increase in food prices in December<\/strong>, as measured by Statistics South Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The central bank forecasts food inflation to average 5.7% this year,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Onions, cooking oil and samp \u2014 an ingredient made from dried corn kernels \u2014 were the biggest contributors to the index remaining steady as they eased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gauge, crunching data from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity group, tracks the prices of 14 key ingredients in barbecues \u2014 known locally as a braai \u2014 consumed in South African townships.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Braai-index-Jan-2024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"814\" height=\"644\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Braai-index-Jan-2024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-747382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Braai-index-Jan-2024.jpg 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Braai-index-Jan-2024-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Braai-index-Jan-2024-768x608.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>To compile its survey, the PMBEJD\u2019s data collectors track food prices on the shelves of 47 supermarkets and 32 butcheries that target the low-income market in the greater areas of Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg and the northwestern town of Springbok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sticky food prices have been a key driver of overall inflation and have contributed to the central bank\u2019s monetary policy committee retaining interest rates at a 2009 high of 8.25% since July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the MPC\u2019s Jan. 25 meeting, Governor Lesetja Kganyago said while inflation eased during the latter part of 2023, it needs to trend lower to the midpoint of the reserve bank\u2019s 3% to 6% target band, where it prefers to anchor expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t a discernible trend that shows that inflation is declining towards our target,\u201d he said. \u201cFor as long as there isn\u2019t any sustained decline of inflation towards our target, and more importantly that inflation stays there in a sustained manner, don\u2019t expect us to recalibrate policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Better-than-expected rainfall in South Africa at the end of last year and this month may mean that an anticipated drought from El Ni\u00f1o-induced weather conditions has been averted and could help to keep food inflation in check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/747020\/food-price-relief-coming-for-south-africa\/\">Food price relief coming for South Africa<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The latest Bloomberg braai index shows that it&#8217;s becoming cheaper to engage in South Africa&#8217;s favourite pastime &#8211;
