{"id":74814,"date":"2014-12-01T08:33:02","date_gmt":"2014-12-01T06:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=74814"},"modified":"2014-12-01T09:00:11","modified_gmt":"2014-12-01T07:00:11","slug":"panel-wants-e-tolls-scrapped-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/74814\/panel-wants-e-tolls-scrapped-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Panel wants e-tolls scrapped: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The final report handed in by the e-toll panel set up by Gauteng premier David Makhura\u00a0is understood to recommend that the province&#8217;s controversial tolling system be scrapped.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to ANC sources, <a title=\"http:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/thetimes\/2014\/12\/01\/scrap-e-tolls-says-panel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/thetimes\/2014\/12\/01\/scrap-e-tolls-says-panel\" target=\"_blank\">speaking to The Times<\/a> following the handing in of the report on Sunday (30 November 2014).<\/p>\n<p>The Times quoted insiders who said that the e-toll panelists believe the system would strangle the Gauteng economy and further damage the national economy, ultimately impacting the poor.<\/p>\n<p>Makhura has remained silent on the contents of the report.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the premier would not divulge what recommendations the e-toll review panel had tabled, because he had not read the report and did not want to make any rash announcements.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t want to make a mistake,&#8221; he told reporters in Johannesburg at the hand over of the report from the review panel.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a public outcry over the implementation of e-tolls on Gauteng roads, with many motorists refusing to pay their bills.<\/p>\n<p>Panel chairman Professor Muxe Nkondo handed the panel&#8217;s final report to Makhura at the Emoyeni conference centre in Parktown. He was accompanied by some of the panelists.<\/p>\n<p>The panel was appointed by Makhura in July to examine the economic and social impact of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project and the e-tolling system set up to fund it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Early in the new year we will conclude our process and make a determination.
