{"id":750102,"date":"2024-02-08T15:45:47","date_gmt":"2024-02-08T13:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=750102"},"modified":"2024-02-08T15:45:52","modified_gmt":"2024-02-08T13:45:52","slug":"more-disappointment-for-south-africas-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/750102\/more-disappointment-for-south-africas-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"More disappointment for South Africa&#8217;s economy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s manufacturing sector showed minimal growth in December, with it set only to have a diminutive impact on the country&#8217;s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figure for Q4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>StatsSA&#8217;s data showed that South African manufacturing production increased 0.7% year-on-year in December 2023 &#8211; the slowest increase in three months primarily attributed to a struggling energy sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;While load shedding eased somewhat in December, the electricity supply predicament remains a significant challenge for the energy-intensive manufacturing sector and the economy as a whole,&#8221; said economist Lara Hodes from Investec. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, quarter-on-quarter seasonally adjusted basis (the measure used to calculate GDP), manufacturing output largely fell flat at 0.1%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Accordingly, it will make a negligible contribution to the quarter\u2019s overall GDP reading,&#8221; said Hodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturing production in South Africa was up by a marginal 0.7% year-on-year in December 2023, which was notably below expectations of a 2.7% year-on-year lift.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-32.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"607\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-32-1024x607.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-750168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-32-1024x607.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-32-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-32-768x455.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-32.png 1077w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: StatsSA<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The largest contributions were made by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products (5.3% and contributing 1.1 percentage points);<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wood and wood products, paper, publishing and printing\u00a0(2,7% and contributing 0,3 of a percentage point); and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Food and beverages (0,9% and contributing 0,3 of a percentage point).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, seasonally adjusted manufacturing production decreased by 1.7% in December compared with the previous month. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-29.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"687\" height=\"143\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-29.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-750114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-29.png 687w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-29-300x62.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 687px) 100vw, 687px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: StatsSA<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Manufacturing sales<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seasonally adjusted manufacturing sales increased by 1.3% in December 2023 compared with November 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This follows month-on-month changes of +1.7% in November 2023 and -0.6% in October 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Numbers show that 5 of the 10 categories included in the manufacturing basket increased annually in December. Petroleum, chemical products, and rubber and plastic categories collectively comprise 24.86% of the manufacturing basket, contributing 1.1% points to the overall growth of 5.3% y\/y.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The largest volume of sales were in the food and beverages division, followed by basic iron and steel products, and then petroleum\/chemical products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Yearly manufacturing statistics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Total manufacturing production increased by 0,4% compared with 2022.
