{"id":751372,"date":"2024-02-13T15:35:12","date_gmt":"2024-02-13T13:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=751372"},"modified":"2024-02-13T15:35:17","modified_gmt":"2024-02-13T13:35:17","slug":"mining-production-rises-slightly-but-remains-below-expectations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/751372\/mining-production-rises-slightly-but-remains-below-expectations\/","title":{"rendered":"Mining production rises slightly, but remains below expectations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>2023 was a tough year for mining in South Africa, with the latest data from the Minerals Council South Africa showing that the mining sector\u2019s contribution to the country&#8217;s GDP crashed 12% over the year due to the electricity and logistics crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/publications\/P2041\/P2041December2023.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/publications\/P2041\/P2041December2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published by StatsSA<\/a> has shown that the industry saw marginal but evident growth in certain areas for December 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mining production<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mining production in the country increased by&nbsp;0.6% in December 2023 compared with December 2022 &#8211; a marginal improvement but below the prediction of a 4.9% increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The largest positive contributors of mining production were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PGMs (9.4% and contributing 2.8 percentage points);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coal (5.8% and contributing 1.3 percentage points); <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chromium ore (19.9% and contributing 0.7 of a percentage point).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If measured on a quarter-on-quarter seasonally adjusted basis, production is up 2.5%.
