{"id":753359,"date":"2024-02-20T14:30:52","date_gmt":"2024-02-20T12:30:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=753359"},"modified":"2024-02-20T14:30:58","modified_gmt":"2024-02-20T12:30:58","slug":"gauteng-plots-its-move-away-from-eskom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/753359\/gauteng-plots-its-move-away-from-eskom\/","title":{"rendered":"Gauteng plots its move away from Eskom"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Gauteng Provincial Government says it is progressing with its plans to reduce the country&#8217;s economic hub&#8217;s dependence on Eskom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his State of the Province Address on Monday (19 February), Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi noted that the province aims to tap into 800MW of solar power through a new solar park, which will supply additional capacity to the grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This plan &#8211; part of Gauteng&#8217;s budgeted R1.2 billion energy investment &#8211; will eventually provide a &#8220;shield to residents against two stages of load shedding&#8221;, the premier said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lesufi said that Sibanye-Stillwater had recently approved land leases of the province&#8217;s appointed six independent power producers who will develop a photovoltaic power station (also known as a solar farm cluster) in the Merafong Local Municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This investment, combined with smart metres, can generate the megawatts needed to cushion our residents against two stages of load shedding, a critical step toward energy stability for the nation\u2019s economic hub,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, around 100MW of capacity is expected to be added to the grid from April by City Power using the Open Cycle Gas Turbine technology facilities in Johnware and Durban Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to expand to 300MW in the new financial year,&#8221; said Lesufi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The provincial government said this intervention is critical, considering Gauteng contributes around one-third of South Africa&#8217;s GDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe protracted electricity crisis has caused significant hardship for people in our province and has had a detrimental effect on the growth of Gauteng\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Although energy is not a competency of the province, load shedding\u2019s crippling effect on the functionality of the state and its impact on broader society compelled us to intervene,\u201d said Lesufi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/751038\/cape-town-starts-buying-excess-solar-from-residents-heres-how-to-apply\/\">Cape Town starts buying excess solar power from residents \u2013 here\u2019s how to apply<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has laid out the province&#8217;s plans to add hundreds of megawatts to the grid to spare South Africa&#8217;s economic hub from the damage caused by load shedding.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":101,"featured_media":649357,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[23],"tags":[1164,1652,19308,6191],"class_list":["post-753359","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-government","tag-eskom","tag-gauteng","tag-loadshedding","tag-solar-farm"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/753359","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/101"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=753359"}],"version-history":[{"count":8,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/753359\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":753425,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/753359\/revisions\/753425"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/649357"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=753359"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=753359"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=753359"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
