{"id":75430,"date":"2014-12-08T14:16:03","date_gmt":"2014-12-08T12:16:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=75430"},"modified":"2014-12-08T14:16:39","modified_gmt":"2014-12-08T12:16:39","slug":"remove-sabc-chair-from-transnet-board-da","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/media\/75430\/remove-sabc-chair-from-transnet-board-da\/","title":{"rendered":"Remove SABC chair from Transnet board: DA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The DA is requesting the removal of SABC chair, Ellen Tshabalala, from the board of another state owned entity, Transnet.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Parliament\u2019s communications portfolio committee resolved unanimously to recommend Tshabalala\u2019s removal from office after an inquiry into whether she lied about her academic qualifications found her guilty on two charges of misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>The first charge of misconduct against Tshabalala relates to her stating on her CV that she had obtained the two qualifications from UNISA when she applied for the job as SABC chairwoman.<\/p>\n<p>However the university has no record of her completing either one.<\/p>\n<p>The other charge relates to an affidavit she submitted to Parliament stating certificates of her qualifications were stolen during a burglary at her home.<\/p>\n<p>The DA laid a charge of perjury against Tshabalala for lying about the theft.<\/p>\n<p>Tshabalala meanwhile, maintains that she has the qualification, but will only provide them in court.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday (4 December), the DA laid a charge of perjury against Tshabalala for lying about the theft, and on Monday (8 December), the political party said it would write to the Minister of Public Enterprises, Lynne Brown, requesting that she invoke her shareholders\u2019 powers in terms of the Companies Act, 17 of 2008 and remove Ellen Tshabalala immediately from the Transnet board.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Section 71(a) of the Act empowers the minister to convene a shareholders meeting where she, as the governments representative and sole shareholder of Transnet, can pass an ordinary resolution resolving that Ellen Tshabalala be removed from the board,&#8221; said Natasha Michael, DA shadow minister of public enterprises.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These bogus qualifications, however, remain part of her bio on Transnet\u2019s website,&#8221; the DA said of of Tshabalala&#8217;s academic qualifications.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ms Tshabalala has displayed outright dishonesty by firstly lying about her qualifications and secondly by lying to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications\u2019 Inquiry into her qualifications,&#8221; Michael said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A person with questionable integrity, who faces criminal investigations and\u00a0 is on record lying to Parliament, should not be\u00a0 employed in the public service, let alone on the board of a state owned enterprise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With the constant crises that plague state owned enterprises, focus cannot be diverted from the real work that has to be done.
