Cell C has announced that it has completed its Radio Access Network (RAN) upgrade project in Gauteng, and plans to roll out fibre for its LTE strategy early next year.<\/p>\n
The operator said that the RAN upgrade was a complete modernisation of equipment and entailed replacing out-dated network equipment on 1,215 base stations in the province.<\/p>\n
Cell C added that it also spent part of its 2014 capital investment of R2,3-billion on the rollout of new towers to increase capacity and coverage across the country.<\/p>\n
During 2014, Cell C erected 442 towers across the country, of which 256 were deployed in Gauteng.<\/p>\n
The operator said that it has an additional 158 sites planned for Gauteng, which are expected to be online in early 2015.<\/p>\n
Cell C said that the modernisation of the network, combined with the increased stability and additional sites, creates the required framework for its Long Term Evolution (LTE) strategy.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have also invested significantly in fibre deployment across the country and connecting fibre to each of our base stations is one of the company\u2019s top priorities in 2015 in line with our LTE strategy,\u201d said Cell C CEO Jose Dos Santos.<\/p>\n
Dos Santos added that Cell C will continue to upgrade and increase capacity on its 3G sites to improve customers\u2019 data experience.<\/p>\n
