{"id":75526,"date":"2014-12-09T13:15:16","date_gmt":"2014-12-09T11:15:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=75526"},"modified":"2014-12-09T13:15:16","modified_gmt":"2014-12-09T11:15:16","slug":"eskom-blackouts-are-a-national-crisis-da","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/75526\/eskom-blackouts-are-a-national-crisis-da\/","title":{"rendered":"Eskom blackouts are a national crisis: DA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eskom must declare the rolling blackouts a national crisis, DA parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane said on Tuesday (9 December).<\/p>\n<p>Maimane was speaking outside the offices of the public enterprises ministry in Pretoria where he handed over a list of demands addressed to minister Lynne Brown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president, the public enterprises minister, and Eskom must come clean and acknowledge that load shedding is indicative of a national electricity crisis,\u201d said Maimane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow more than ever we need to see transparency and honesty from government on the full extent of the crisis, and the plans in place to solve it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Eskom CEO Tshediso Matona said the country was not experiencing a power supply crisis. Instead, the manner in which Eskom was reported on created the perception of a crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouth Africans know that it is completely untrue that we are not facing a crisis,\u201d Maimane said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis crisis has touched the daily lives of all South Africans, and affects every aspect of our existence including our transport infrastructure, our water supply, our hospitals and our schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maimane demanded that President Jacob Zuma immediately sign the Independent System and Market Operator (Ismo) Bill into law so the electricity grid was open to independent power producers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill will provide the legal and regulatory framework for independent power producers to contribute to the grid, but it continues to gather dust on President Zuma\u2019s desk,\u201d Maimane said.<\/p>\n<p>An immediate moratorium on bonuses for Eskom executives should also be implemented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFormer Eskom CEO Brian Dames earned R23 million last year while load shedding continued to hit households and businesses with greater intensity,\u201d said Maimane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEskom must show commitment to freezing any intended bonus payments to its executives until South Africa\u2019s power generating capacity exceeds demand by at least a 15 percent reserve margin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Consumers should be receiving tax benefits for buying generators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis exorbitant expense can be directly attributed to Eskom\u2019s failure to provide the basic service of electricity,\u201d Maimane said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMinister Brown\u2026 should be at the forefront of negotiating these tax deductions with the National Treasury to see their inclusion in the forthcoming budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The last demand on the DA\u2019s list was that government followed a \u201cWorld Cup approach\u201d to completing the Medupi and Kusile power stations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedupi should have been online by 2007\/8 already, yet experts estimate that it will not even reach 10 percent of its promised capacity to generate electricity by late next year,\u201d said Maimane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery possible step must be taken to prevent further work stoppages and disruptions at the power plants.
