{"id":756267,"date":"2024-02-29T15:21:55","date_gmt":"2024-02-29T13:21:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=756267"},"modified":"2024-02-29T15:22:02","modified_gmt":"2024-02-29T13:22:02","slug":"south-africas-banks-are-closing-the-taps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/756267\/south-africas-banks-are-closing-the-taps\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s banks are closing the taps"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South African consumers are turning to credit cards to supplement their lifestyles &#8211; but banks are extremely cautious when lending. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Nedbank\u2019s latest assessment of the&nbsp;broad money supply&nbsp;and credit, growth in household credit slowed to 4.1% in January 2024 &#8211; the lowest level since March 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The household market weakened further as the impact of higher interest rates continued to bite, poor economic prospects eroded household confidence, and commercial banks were more cautious in extending credit,&#8221; said the Nedbank Group Economic Unit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, the performances of the various subcomponents were varied. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home loans remained subdued, with yoy growth unchanged at 3.3% in January. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personal loans declined from 4.2% in December 2023 to a two-year low of 1.2%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Credit card usage<\/strong>, however, remained <strong>robust, dropping slightly from 9.3% in December to 9.2%<\/strong> in January, while overdrafts recovered from a sharp contraction of -4.6% to 0.9%. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-117.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"959\" height=\"661\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-117.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-756271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-117.png 959w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-117-300x207.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-117-768x529.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 959px) 100vw, 959px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We expect credit demand to remain subdued in the first half of 2024 as the cumulative impact of the interest rate hikes will continue to filter through the economy,&#8221; said Nedbank&#8217;s economist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Confidence also remains fragile, given the poor growth prospects and heightened policy uncertainty ahead of the national elections.
