{"id":757263,"date":"2024-03-04T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=757263"},"modified":"2024-03-04T15:21:19","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T13:21:19","slug":"its-a-good-time-to-braai-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/757263\/its-a-good-time-to-braai-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s a good time to braai in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The average cost of a traditional South African barbecue rose less than the inflation rate for the first time since the gauge was tracked in November 2022, suggesting food prices may continue to ease.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bloomberg\u2019s Shisa Nyama Index, an early indicator of where food inflation may be heading, shows the average price rise of a backyard barbecue was 2.5% in February from a year earlier versus 6.2% a month earlier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was less than the 5.3% year-on-year official headline inflation rate in January and a 7% increase in food costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Bloomberg-braai-index.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"814\" height=\"501\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Bloomberg-braai-index.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-757265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Bloomberg-braai-index.jpg 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Bloomberg-braai-index-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Bloomberg-braai-index-768x473.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A sharp drop in onion and cooking oil prices of 28.5% and 13%, respectively, contributed to the fall in the index.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lofty food prices have been a key driver of overall inflation in South Africa and have contributed to the central bank\u2019s monetary policy committee remaining cautious of lowering interest rates that have been kept at a 2009 high of 8.25% since May.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South African Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago, in an interview with Bloomberg on Wednesday (28 February), reiterated that the benchmark rate would only be cut once inflation has been tamed and cited food prices, geopolitical risks and their impact on global supply chains and energy markets as some of the upside risks to the outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food prices may be adversely impacted by dryer weather in the coming months.
