{"id":757885,"date":"2024-03-07T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-07T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=757885"},"modified":"2024-03-06T15:24:52","modified_gmt":"2024-03-06T13:24:52","slug":"south-africans-are-living-in-recession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/757885\/south-africans-are-living-in-recession\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africans are living in recession"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s GDP may be growing, but South Africa is in a per capita recession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Stats SA, South Africa&#8217;s GDP recorded 0.1% quarter-on-quarter (qoq) growth in Q4 2023, meaning that the country avoided a technical recession after GDP shrank by 0.2% qoq in Q3. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the entirety of 2023, the nation&#8217;s GDP saw growth of 0.6%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government welcomed the slight increase in GDP, with Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni noting that the figure surpasses pre-pandemic levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This indicates a resilient economy showing signs of recovery and bettering previous strength. We are particularly pleased to see the transport, storage, and communication industries leading the growth,&#8221; said  Ntshavheni.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/gdp-q4-2024-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"446\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/gdp-q4-2024--1024x446.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-757541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/gdp-q4-2024--1024x446.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/gdp-q4-2024--300x131.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/gdp-q4-2024--768x335.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/gdp-q4-2024-.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>However, Maarten Ackerman, Chief Economist at Citadel, said that there is no real cause for celebration as the economy is not growing fast enough to keep up with the nation&#8217;s population growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSimply put, <strong>the economy is growing at around 1%, while the population is growing at around 1.5% to 1.6%<\/strong>. The economy isn\u2019t producing enough goods and services to keep apace, and there is a greater need for social support while unemployment keeps increasing,&#8221; said Ackerman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEconomic growth was flat in the last quarter of 2023. We are sitting at 1.2% year-on-year real unadjusted GDP growth, while the average real GDP growth for 2023 was only 0.6%.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Although this is not officially considered a recession, and some are celebrating it, in my view, this is still a very weak economic performance, as <strong>we are not outpacing population growth.
