The City of Tshwane is set to launch Wi-Fi TV, a video-on-demand (VOD) service made available over the Tshwane Free Wi-Fi network, on Friday (12 December).<\/p>\n
“Wi-Fi TV is a hyper localized video-on-demand solution enabled for unlimited access to users of the Tshwane Free Wi-Fi service via the Tobetsa content portal,” it said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The service has various channels covering local content under What\u2019s On, Sports, Faith and MyCity themes.<\/p>\n
“Other services to be released in 2015 include the Drive Inn or Wi-Fi Voice,” it said.<\/p>\n
Wi-Fi Drive Inn is a video-on-demand service enabled at specific locations that will enable a user to watch a selection of movies including some of the latest Hollywood blockbusters over their private devices when within the Wi-Fi Drive Inn area, City of Tshwane said.<\/p>\n
Wi-Fi Voice is a VOIP service that enables free calls between users connected to the Tshwane Free WiFi network using the WiFi Voice application.<\/p>\n
“A user will simply download the Tshwane Voice app using a smart phone from the relevant app store,” it said.<\/p>\n
In July, Tshwane executive mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa announced the launch of the second phase of the city\u2019s free Wi-Fi rollout.<\/p>\n
In April, in his State of the City address, Ramokgopa said that in the next eighteen months, the City of Tshwane wouldroll out about 600 additional Wi-Fi hotspots throughout Tshwane, prioritising institutions of learning.<\/p>\n
The first phase of the roll-out was scheduled for conclusion by the end of November 2013 in 5 locations: TUT Soshanguve Campus, University of Pretoria Hatfield Campus, Tshwane North College, Mamelodi Community Centre, and Church Square in the Pretoria CBD.<\/p>\n
The long-term plan is to provide free Wi-Fi to all government educational institutions in the City of Tshwane by 2016.<\/p>\n
