Although South Africans are facing increases in petrol and other cost-of-living expenses, some car brands and models remain favourites among South Africans who could afford to purchase a new car in February 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Naamsa New Vehicle Sales stats show aggregate domestic new vehicle sales in February 2024 were 44,749 units \u2013 reflecting a decline of 413 units, or a fall of 0.9%, from the 45,162 vehicles sold in February 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the new passenger car market at 28,857 units had registered a decline of 925 cars, or a loss of 3.1%, compared to the 29,782 new cars sold in February 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, car rental sales accounted for a sound 12.9% of the new passenger vehicle sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adding to this is the sales of medium commercial vehicles, which declined year-on-year by 7.7%, while heavy commercial vehicles and buses increased by 14%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, the trend continued the consecutive months of decline since the end of 2023 in the new vehicle market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The persisting economic strain remains a real concern for household income, and the weak new vehicle market reflects that middle-income households are restricting big financial commitments for items such as vehicles at present, said Naamsa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite this, Toyota remained the top-selling brand with 11,524 units sold last month, which is slightly higher than January\u2019s 10,855 units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volkswagen maintained its position as the second most popular brand with 5,333 sales, while Suzuki secured the third position on the list of top sellers last month with 5,221 sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  6. Hyundai<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 2,512 units<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Isuzu<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 2,101 units<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Haval<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 1,656 units<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. Chery\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 1,504 units<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. Renault\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 1,315 units<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
