{"id":760161,"date":"2024-03-14T09:16:18","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T07:16:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=760161"},"modified":"2024-03-14T09:16:24","modified_gmt":"2024-03-14T07:16:24","slug":"another-massive-own-goal-for-south-africa-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/760161\/another-massive-own-goal-for-south-africa-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Another massive own-goal for South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Africa\u2019s inefficient and aging ports are hampering the continent\u2019s chances of capitalizing on a surge in ship traffic that\u2019s avoiding attacks by Houthi rebels through the Red Sea, logistics experts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of vessels sailing around the southern tip of Africa is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-03-12\/number-of-ships-sailing-around-africa-up-85-on-houthi-attacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up 85%<\/a>&nbsp;from the first half of December, when the Iran-backed, Yemen-based terrorists intensified their attacks on ships, according to Clarksons Research. Some of the biggest beneficiaries are ports in South Africa, Madagascar, Mauritius, and Namibia, all of which have seen volumes rise, manufacturing and logistics company Fictiv Inc. said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, most ports in Africa are inefficient and not in the best condition to be able to fully realize all the benefits,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/vinnylicata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vinny Licata<\/a>, Fictiv\u2019s head of logistics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis could be a real opportunity for Africa, but several ports were already congested due to inefficiencies. Investments are needed to enable them to compete.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merchant ships have largely avoided the route that would ultimately take them through the Suez Canal since the attacks started. Last week, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-03-06\/ship-hit-and-damaged-in-latest-vessel-attack-near-yemen-s-coast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">missile strike<\/a>\u00a0killed three crew members, the first confirmed deaths since the attacks began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Shipping-changes-Bloomberg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"814\" height=\"1319\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Shipping-changes-Bloomberg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-760167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Shipping-changes-Bloomberg.jpg 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Shipping-changes-Bloomberg-185x300.jpg 185w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Shipping-changes-Bloomberg-632x1024.jpg 632w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Shipping-changes-Bloomberg-768x1244.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, Africa accounts for about 6% of global maritime trade, despite approximately 90% of its imports and exports being transported by sea, according to Freight Right Global Logistics Chief Executive Officer and Founder&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freightright.com\/team\/robert-khachatryan#:~:text=Robert%20Khachatryan%20is%20the%20founder,for%20both%20commerce%20and%20science.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robert Khachatryan.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freight costs from Asia to the US East Coast are projected to increase by 20% to 30%, with delivery times extended by two weeks due to the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, said Khachatryan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s here that South Africa\u2019s port-infrastructure problems \u2014 ranging from equipment breakdowns to staff shortages \u2014 hurt its competitive advantage. Shipping companies using the Cape route for east-west trade have largely avoided having to restock and refuel at South Africa\u2019s maritime hubs due to their inability to provide services. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Cost-climb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"814\" height=\"457\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Cost-climb.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-760173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Cost-climb.jpg 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Cost-climb-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Cost-climb-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis shift has directly benefited strategically located ports like Toamasina in Madagascar, Port Louis in Mauritius, and Walvis Bay in Namibia, which lie along the east-west route connecting Asia with Europe\u201d as ships avoid South Africa, Khachatryan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Countries with the capability to quickly scale up port and logistical operations \u2014 such as Morocco and Ghana \u2014 could accommodate the increased demand for maritime services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTheir investment in port infrastructure in recent years positions them to manage the surge efficiently,\u201d Khachatryan said.
