{"id":760399,"date":"2024-03-16T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-16T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=760399"},"modified":"2024-03-15T15:26:29","modified_gmt":"2024-03-15T13:26:29","slug":"chinese-carmaker-chery-has-big-plans-for-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/760399\/chinese-carmaker-chery-has-big-plans-for-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese carmaker Chery has big plans for South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Chery is one of South Africa\u2019s best-selling car brands, and its family of vehicles will soon be getting much larger with the addition of new models pulled from its various sub-brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a representative from Chery South Africa, the company is planning to introduce cars from its Exeed, iCar, Karry, and Luxeed divisions, <a href=\"https:\/\/topauto.co.za\/news\/99497\/4-new-chery-brands-are-coming-to-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> TopAuto. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, these cars will be sold under the existing nameplates of Chery, Jaecoo, and Omoda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chery first entered the South African market in 2008, but their low-priced vehicles failed to gain traction due to the lack of emphasis on producing high-quality cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This resulted in a poor reputation among car enthusiasts, particularly due to their low safety ratings \u2013 with most models receiving very low scores or none at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this trend is fast becoming a thing of the past as Chinese brands seem to be <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/748614\/chinese-car-makers-bet-big-on-south-africa-and-won-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pulling ahead in the South African car market<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chery resumed operations in South Africa in 2021 and is now selling three models from its Chery Tiggo Pro range of SUVs, which include the Tiggo 4 Pro, 7 Pro, and 8 Pro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, the automaker expanded its local operations by introducing its first sub-brand, Omoda. It currently offers six different models, including three crossovers (LX, RX, and Sterra ET), three SUVs (TX, TXL, VX), and a sedan (Sterra ES). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two Sterra models are battery-electric vehicles, while the rest use petrol engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Exceed.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"607\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Exceed-1024x607.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-760421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Exceed-1024x607.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Exceed-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Exceed-768x455.jpg 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Exceed.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">2023 EXEED LX<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Luxeed is a car brand that resulted from a partnership between Chery and tech company Huawei. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The partnership was announced in May 2023, and the brand launched its first car, the electric S7 sedan, a few months later in November. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The S7 is a premium model with a starting price of $35,000.
