{"id":764263,"date":"2024-03-28T06:53:05","date_gmt":"2024-03-28T04:53:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=764263"},"modified":"2024-03-28T06:53:11","modified_gmt":"2024-03-28T04:53:11","slug":"expect-water-woes-for-the-next-5-years-says-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/764263\/expect-water-woes-for-the-next-5-years-says-government\/","title":{"rendered":"Expect water woes for the next 5 years, says government"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>South Africa\u2019s commercial hub, Gauteng Province, will be short of water until a cross-border supply expansion is completed in about 2029, a government official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delays to the second phase of the $2 billion Lesotho Highlands Water Project have left Gauteng \u2014 and a wider region that accounts for about 60% of South Africa\u2019s economic activity and in which 26 million people live \u2014 without adequate supply, said Sean Phillips, director general of the Department of Water and Sanitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until the Lesotho expansion is completed, \u201csupply is very tight,\u201d Phillips said in a webinar on Wednesday organized by Creamer Media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The threat of inadequate supply to the country\u2019s industrial heartland was highlighted this month when a vast swath of the country\u2019s biggest city, Johannesburg, was left without water for almost two weeks after a breakdown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rand Water, the bulk supplier that draws water from the first phase of the Lesotho Project, warned Johannesburg and two other major urban centres that its systems were on the verge of collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both this phase of the Lesotho project and the uMkhomazi Water Project, which is due to supply the southeastern city of Durban, are now proceeding after having stalled, Phillips said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lesotho project consists of the construction of the Polihali Dam in Lesotho as well as tunnels to transfer the water to the Vaal River system in South Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will boost the annual supply of water to South Africa from Lesotho to 1.26 billion cubic meters (44.5 billion cubic feet) from 780 million currently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-businesstech wp-block-embed-businesstech\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"W4HsBZhpQB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/761099\/it-could-go-from-bad-to-worse-for-water-in-south-africa\/\">It could go from bad to worse for water in South Africa<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute;
