{"id":766851,"date":"2024-04-14T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-14T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=766851"},"modified":"2024-04-22T14:23:04","modified_gmt":"2024-04-22T12:23:04","slug":"85-towns-hit-with-name-changes-in-south-africa-and-more-on-the-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/766851\/85-towns-hit-with-name-changes-in-south-africa-and-more-on-the-way\/","title":{"rendered":"85 towns hit with name changes in South Africa \u2013 and more are on the way"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Data from the South African Geographic Names Council (SAGNC) shows that 1,505 name and name changes have been given since the start of the standardisation of the place names process, and 85 towns are among these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SAGNC was established by the South African Geographical Names Council Act, 1998 (Act No.118 of 1998) as the body responsible for standardising geographical names in South Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Council, its mission is to standardise geographical names in South Africa and to redress, correct and transform the geographical naming system in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SAGNC recorded data shows that name changes are proposed for several geographical features, including towns, villages, settlements, townships, mountains, rivers, airports, roads, and post offices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, the data shows that the council has gazetted and named or renamed 1,505 geographical features in South Africa since its inception. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the data, most of the naming and name changes have occurred in Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN), while the Eastern Cape and Limpopo were also popular provinces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 1,505 items noted on the SAGNC&#8217;s data sheet, 85 were Towns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It must be noted that the data gathered from the SAGNC suggests that either the old name of the town was not recorded or the town was new and, therefore, was then given a name. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data collection seems to have improved after 2010. The full list of the 85 name changes or new names is given in the table below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><div class=\"table-responsive\"><table included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Port Elizabeth<\/strong> to <strong>Gqeberha<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Morgan\u2019s Bay<\/strong> to <strong>Gxarha<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cradock<\/strong> to <strong>Nxuba<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Uitenhage<\/strong> to <strong>Kariega<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>King Williamstown<\/strong> to <strong>Qonce<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Queenstown<\/strong> to<strong> Komani<\/strong>; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grahamstown<\/strong> to <strong>Makhanda<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from the naming of new geographic features in KwaZulu-Natal, most of the changed names for towns and cities have been in the Eastern Cape\u2014much like all the name changes proposed for towns in the past and in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent parliamentary Q&amp;A, the minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture noted that the total number of applications received and gazetted from the Eastern Cape Geographical Names Committee (ECPGNC) since the start of the geographical names process in the Republic of South Africa is 312, which includes the various towns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only one application was not approved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The minister explained that applications<b> not approved were the city name changes from East London to KuGompo <\/b>(applied for in 2020) and, initially, the changing of the name Grahamstown to Makhanda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, after consultations, Grahamstown&#8217;s name change was returned to the minister, approved, and then gazetted on 29 June 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>More on the way <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More recently, the ECPGNC has been holding public hearings in the province to change the names of the towns, including Graaff-Reinet and Aberdeen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The committee wants to make the following changes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Graaff-Reient&nbsp;<\/strong>to&nbsp;<strong>Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Adendorp<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>Kwa Mseki Bishop Limba<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aberdeen<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>Camdeboo<\/strong>; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nieu-Bethesda<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>Kwa Noheleni<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, <strong>according to the SAGNC, 58 Geographic Name Applications are still being processed<\/strong>, meaning plenty more name changes are coming to South Africa,<strong> <\/strong>some of them more than likely to be Towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the proposed changes have been met with <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/760247\/call-to-stop-name-changes-for-towns-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pushback from the affected communities<\/a>, and political parties in the province have questioned the process used to advance them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, at the end of last month, a host of name changes were pushed through as part of the department&#8217;s last round of name changes in South Africa before the end of the 2023 financial year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the gazetted&nbsp;changes are <strong>Ladysmith <\/strong>in KZN to <strong>uMnambithi<\/strong> and <strong>Kirkwood<\/strong> in the Eastern Cape to <strong>Nqweba<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed
